As for the Bergmite, he asked Ash how many badges he had before the battle. Obviously he'd use a weaker team with a Bergmite instead of Avalugg if he was facing a trainer with few badges.

Greninja is Ash's only starter this gen, that's why it gets more screentime than all the others. Its similar to how overused Treecko/Grovyle/Sceptile was in AG.
When Ash gets two or three starters the writers have to divide screentime for them. But when you're comparing starters to other pokemon on Ash's team, the starters always get the most. It probably wasn't as noticeable in Kanto, Johto and Unova because he had all 3 starters.

is D/P worth watching if I'm already way too critical of X/Y's animation? It just barely meets my standards, but everyone harps about how good Paul is.
I should note that I have skipped a lot with XY, and just kinda zone out when I feel filler moments coming on. And whenever I feel there's moments that just pad out an otherwise good episode, I speed up my video player to 1.3 or 1.5 speed.
The most that interests me is Ash/Feels/Shipping(even doomed ships) and especially strategy
