The first time it noticed something was up with Ash was during the last battle against Shota. Syncro was beginning, but at that crucial moment of activation Ash blanked on what he was supposed to do and Greninja noticed immediately.
This is one of my favorite things about Ash that we've seen during XY.
After losing a critical battle after his disappointing showing in Unova we saw Ash take a major confidence blow as he dealt with it. He over thought battling instead of relying on his instincts. He was so focused on trying to figure out how to beat Viola and overcome her strategies made him almost break down.
Now after 2 loses due to syncro failing mid battle, and once from a failed activation because he was so focused on using it as his trump card, we're finally seeing him hit that wall again in regards to how he thinks and fights his battles.
I'm betting the first Wulfric battle is going to be similar to how Ash fought Shota most recently. He'll be on edge, tense and over thinking things instead of relying on his own skills and abilities. With his inner thoughts focusing on how to counter and get around Wulfircs attacks and defenses.
I'm hoping the episode after in the forest has a call back to Shalour where Ash recalls the situation where he tried to use the "rhythm" strategy" in hopes of defeating Korrina. But this time instead of relying on anothers strategy, it's about him relying on a power that he doesn't entirely need.

There wasn't anything in the summary that suggested it, just one screen that showed Ash and Serena falling together.
I figure what'll happen is the group split up to search for him, he finds his answer and what not and after he gets found by Serena and Pikachu (no surprise there given recent episodes). Afterwards, something happens to Serena and Pikachu and with Ash's answer already in hand he'll get triggered and Ash Greninja occurs again. Then we go back to the gym and getting the Shalour repeat for perfected form against mega Abomasnow. Give or take Ash recalling what Olympia said about Greninja and what Serena said about him and his Pokemon while finding the answer.
