Brock also probably only stayed for AG because back then the writers probably didn't want to axe both Misty/Brock at the same time. Back then the writers had no clue if the anime would be successful without Misty and Brock had just returned after Orange Islands, so it made sense he stuck around.

Had the writers just gotten rid of Misty/Brock at the same time, everyone would have known from the start the anime would have new companions every series. The point is with every other saga they knew they could continue and do something new or better:
- Johto ended with Ash beating Gary but losing to a new trainer from Hoenn. Fair enough it paved the way for AG.
- AG had Ash conquer the Battle Frontier, May's Contest arc was wrapped up and Ash became a competent trainer. Made sense since this paved the way for DP.
- DP had Ash at his best close to winning a league. Paul was his toughest rival. Dawn was the co-star. Then Tobias at the end was likely a result of executive meddling also leading to the BW reboot.
So now we have XY which was supposed to more or less undo what BW did and continue off of DP. So if XY ends poorly with Serena/crush being dropped, a failed league and Greninja dumped at Oak's...what will this lead to? I can't see anything better.
