Gen 4 was well balanced and paced, had a good, if slightly over-dramatic story, a well-thought out region, and somewhat rational pokemon distribution.
Gen 6 was a clusterfuck of isolated features, no story, and shit balance. Gen 6 did introduce some good stuff, make no mistake, but the shitswamp that stuff was buried under makes it hard to see sometimes.

Emerald was a blast. I would play the battle frontier for hours. I felt like there were secrets up the Ying yang in that game. I didn't really have internet at that time so I didn't know the Regis was the only real secret in that game.
Gen 4 is were I feel the series went to shit. Gen 4 is where I noticed all pokes started looking cartoony as fuck. The cries were terrible. Barry was introduced that piece of annoying dog shit. Platinum was barely bearable.

Hoenn was meh for me. I've probably spent the least amount of time with the Gen 3 games. Most of the pokemon are weak/forgettable, the region sucked, the story was a step down from Gen 2, and the competitive scene was stagnant. Abilities were good, but that was about it. I will say though, Gen 6 is a close second for being my least favorite, but the introduction of Hawlucha saved it.

Gen IV did two things that keep it from being the worst generation in my opinion. Those two things were the physical/special split and one of the best remakes of all time with HG/SS. I'm not just talking about Pokemon remakes either, I mean one of the best video game remakes period.

I graduated when Gen 4 came out, and that was 9 years ago. I started playing pokemon when I was 9 years old. It's very possible Gen 4 babies to 18 now.
Hoenn babies been legal for awhile though. They were very obvious when they became legal because the original amount of hate for Gen 3 back in '10 was a lot more visible. I miss them being underage, but the Sinnoh faggots should even it out at least since I at least enjoyed their game.

Years ago tutorials couldn't really be included in games because of limitations, be it graphical ones or how much space they had. Kids had to learn how to play the game by playing the game and it worked just fine. Now we have tutorials for everything and lots of handholding everywhere. Sure, the games are designed for children but you can make a game for children and it can still be difficult. When those children grow up they're going to get bored of those games because they're too easy. Difficult games are generally more interesting and appealing to most people because to achieve something they actually have to put in effort to learn how everything works. It feels a lot more rewarding to finally figure out how something works than when you get told what to do all the time, doesn't it?inb4 genwunnerGen 1 is far from being my favorite gen, it's just that the games became way too fucking easy after gen 5

Four had shit pokemon, most of which were just evolutions of previous generation pokemon, with shit evolutionary mechanics like MUST KNOW ANCIENTPOWER or MUST BE LEVELED UP AROUND ROCK IN FOREST/CAVE, and a billion new items you need to trade things with, because that's ALWAYS fun. It had, what, four fire types? The shitty starter monkeys and Heatran? It also had a stupid amount of legendaries, and not just one, but two of the worst legendary trios in the entire series, where only one out of the box art trio looks good and even then only when holding an item, and the other trio is the exact same pokemon three times over.
Plus the region was boring, and I would have liked more snowy areas, but that's just splitting hairs now.
Five initially had a shit region, that would have been even worse than Four, because you didn't get to see half of it till you beat the Elite 4, but the sequels fixed that right up and gave us new areas too. Even a creepy house, which was one of the better things in Sinnoh.

I quit pokemon right before a/s/e came out. My parents wouldnt buy me a GBA and I "grew out " of pokemon, and I didnt like OR/AS that much desu.
Gen 4 is my favourite because it was the one that reintroduced me to Pokemon when I was 16. used to play with my gf and a friend and his boyfriend, we would meet and eat pizza and trade/combat all night, with the anime playing in the background.

I loved everything about BW1. The atmosphere, the map, how HMs aren't necessary, the bug Pokemon, the story, idle animations in battle, music, etc. But mostly the way the game was presented with "This is a new Pokemon in a foreign land from the others--You're not going to find anything you're used to so you have to learn them all". It reminded me of playing Gen 1 as a kid. You couldn't just grab something familiar and sweep.

B/W weren't necessarily bad, I enjoyed not seeing an old Pokemon until post-game, but they just weren't super memorable to me, either, aside from a few cool Pokemon like Scrafty, Galvantula, Zoroark, and Darmanitan.

I just don't care at all about the single player, I always play pokemon just to play with friends and Gen 6 has the best multiplayer stuff, I know the single player is absolute shit but I'm not trying to give an objective review, OP asked for my favorite gen and that's gen 6.

I don't hate Hoenn, but I just can't click with it. I think it's the atmosphere of the region or something. But I just don't have very many memorable moments. Hell, playing through ORAS most of the time felt like a chore.

Sinnoh was originally my genwunner phase of "Ugh these new pokemon are shit and I hate them, anything after gen3 is dead to me", but then I played it out of boredom and loved a lot of the gen4 pokemon and Sinnoh in general. Unova still a shit though.
