Sugimori cannot into fashion. A lot of the characters he designs nowadays have more of a "function over form" type of deal going on. The guy simply doesn't know what's fashionable, which is why I liked Yusuke Ohmura so much. Being younger and more in-tune with fashion, he was able to design some pretty cool looking characters with more realistic clothing that a teenager would wear.

I can understand people thinking Nate's design is a mess but I don't really see anything wrong with Hugh or Rosa's. They look like typical American teenagers, outside of the ridiculous tights under shorts Nate has going on.
Overall I really do think BW/BW2 had the best designed casts.

The man's losing his touch with females too. It could just be a result of not wanting to waste time and money on something many players are just gonna change as soon as they get customization options, but the last time we got great protagonists of either sex was in Unova. And at least Serena was passable despite being somewhat generic, maybe not standing out in a franchise that gave us Hilda and Rosa but OK on her own. What I've seen of the new one is just, no.

Hugh is ok, nice jacket and the pants are fine.
But Rosa? come on nigga, people mistaken that for a pantyhose, but it is more of a diving suit of sorts, she wears a skirt-short over it, and even has socks (so if it was actually a pantyhose why would she wear socks?)

Personally, I live in San Francisco and attend school in the city and I see a lot of teenagers and young adults wearing all kinds of crazy shit and experimenting with different clothes. I agree though, not all teenagers would wear that shit and I suppose it falls in a niche category. I really like her design though, it's unique and certainly has more going on than the most recent Pokegirl (though I like her too).
Actually, what the male protagonist is wearing I think is what teenagers wear nowadays, a simple t-shirt and jogger pants.

Brendan's new design is simple, practical and "light", one of the most appropriate to the region character outfits.
The shoes fit the rest of his outfit which is composed by monochromatic parts that feature lines as design theme, green and white are also complementary colors to the black and red / orange clothes as well and are the complementary choice for his hat too. Pretty smart choice honestly. I don't think there were other shoes options for his outfit unless Brawly's ones that are more focused on surfing and coral infested beaches, also don't look bad combined with his shorts that are practical for both running, swimming and cycling.

I understand that it's a great design choice and fits in with Brendan's color scheme as well as the region choice. Objectively, it makes sense considering his outfit choice. I just think they could have been better designed and less gross looking and oddly shaped.

Both shoes have a purpose, I like Brendan's but damn, Sun(?)'s shoes are ugly regardless of their purpose.
I guess they are thick for the rock enviroment and eventual reef, definitely rubber on the lower part and waterproof and silicone made upper part, or probably in a breathable fabric.
I don't know, closest thing that comes in my mind are some basketball shoe models which are equally ugly.
What bothers me is the cartoonish aspect they have.
