People say it's an owl, but the Japanese name is Mokuroh, which could also indicate a crow. In English, Rowlet could just be a portmanteau of "crow" and "toilet." I think this proves that Rowlet is actually a crow.
That being said, I think a good nickname for it would be Birdo.
