So, I finally started playing SMD, and holly molly it is so much better than the previous entries (not that they were bad). Everything feels waaay smoother.
The lack of IQ worried me at first but the emeras play a similar role so that's alright. Same for the mons limitand I cannot believe how wrong I was, the part where you team up with the 3 other kids was my favorite so far
As for now, espurr is my favorite character, it's surprising how developed she is considering how little elements they gave away.
I also love how you can find overleveled asleep pokemons throughout some dungeons, makes you think twice before attacking every bypasser.
Also, I'm playing in french, and the translation is super-great, although they made the questionable choice to gender-lock you into a guy while you partner has to be a girl (no matter what you choose during the quiz). I understand that they didn't have much room with the MC, as pronouns are much more important in french than in english and that there was no option to change the dialog, but the partner, really?
My only real complain is that the game seems pretty easy so far, there're so much reviver seed that even if you screw up badly you're never really endangered (the items are also pretty overpowered, especially the slaking branch/confuse branch). Yet the only penalty for dying is starting back from your last save (which happen pretty often).
So yeah, greatest game of 2016 so far (since I'm not living in 'murica) ! I hope the ending won't be as shitty as people make it up to be

Yeah, I've never had to buy them and I almost 100% the game. Items in general are buffed from past games because your characters are weaker, as I'm sure you've noticed. Items pick up the slack, but some do it a little too well.

Asking for some advice here.
I played the DS version of the first PMD game back in 06, and lost interest fairly early in. I found the dungeons bland and boring to look at, and it was my first Mystery Dungeon game whatsoever (though i've known of them since the first PlayStation) and I didn't find the battle system interesting, and didn't give it a lot of a chance to grow on me, and the real killer is the plot didn't grab my attention like I hoped it would, and sold it.
Now, to this day, have admittedly autistic fantasies of living in a world where talking Pokemon live in comfy ass villages and have PG rated problems that need solving, but can always be solved in the end, and having a "weak" yet kind hearted and useful friend who's loyal to me who I can pretend to be an unstated love interest, and "sad stuff" would happen in that world that while ultimately mild is taken seriously within the world itself and would give me feels worth feeling, yet life would ultimately be optimistic and hopeful.
I'd like some way to even remotely realize this fantasy and I'm neither artistically talented nor autistic/dedicated enough to write a fanfic series, so over the last two years or so the idea of giving a PMD game another chance has been slowly creeping up on me.
I'd be probably willing to give the battle system another try to grow on me, or even overlook it if the game world itself still feels worthwhile to spend time in.
Should I give this a shot? Any particular games in the series that might be especially suited to my esoteric tastes/needs? If it matters, I plan to play on actual DS or 3DS hardware, just cause that's how I like to play my non-PC games.

If you can run the emulator, download the shit in the OP and run explorers of sky. If you decide you enjoy it and want to keep playing, then you can buy the physical game, or hack it in, or whatever you need to do, and play it on your physical hardware.

I think any of the games could potentially suit your needs. It's been nearly a decade since I too played Rescue Team so I can't remember how much of what you want is in there, but Explorers of Sky and Super Mystery Dungeon have pretty much everything you want between the two.

funny i should scroll past this, since a lapsed PMD player who played the GBA one just cause I wanted something to play on my Micro back while the GBA was dying, I was thinking about this as well.
I just know I played the demo of the first one on 3DS (Door to Infinity or some shit) and I frankly wasn't that impressed.
I don't expect much, especailly graphically, but the field models for the pokemon characters just seemed really stiff to me.
