I think that people here have the expectation of it being a main game, instead of a side game. As is, looks to be a fun mobile game that'll be similar to Ingress. Heck, keeping the rest of the side games in mind, I'm just glad they have evolutions at all.
That being said, I hope that they improve the battle system and make it so you can connect occupied gyms. Making fields is an important part of Ingress and it just feels out of place not being in this one.

It looks to me like the game recycles the X/Y models, it's just they look better when rendered in a modern resolution.
