It's undeniable that he is forced, but then again, i don't think he was particularly pushed until recently.
The guys in the Smash said they chose Greninja out of many possible Gen VI candidates because they though his design could suit the game perfectly; took over a year to even appear in the anime and got pretty much the same amount of promotion that the other starters got.
He was insanely popular from the start, but a Smash appearance can turn anyone into a superstar. I'd say the cancerous push began when Ash's Frogadier became a Greninja himself. It's a bit more bearable for me though, because, barring those great stats, he became popular on his own merits.
