She got him out of his slump at the start of XY when he was about crack from the pressure of trying to defeat Viola.

Last episode she took care of him and took his place to defend his name. If anything, last episode showed just how close Serena and Ash are. She's been watching him since the beginning, she knows what kind of person he is and how he fights. That's why she fought so well with Pikachu.

I feel it's going to be reasonably accurate to the events themselves, and just cut a lot of detail.
It'll probably make the movie feel more fresh while still promoting the general story.
