I'm sure that by now, most of the audience are people in their 20's that grew up with the series, and they probably tried to cater to them by adding a (more) obvious romance that doesn't require hardcore shippers to grasp at straws.
But in the long run, it's a kids show, we can't get anything too intimate - even a hug feels unlikely.
