Hey /vp/, an update on my project (haven't posted about it in ages)

Quick disclaimer:

Couple years ago I thought 'I wonder how would I fare if Pokemon were real. Traveling around the world and finding elusive animals is probably hard'.

So I decided that I would do just that - armed with a camera, I'll go out and try to 'capture' animals. A shitty 'proof' photo would be marked as 'Seen', a photo that I'd like would be marked as 'Captured'. Only a wild animal would count, so no pets, no zoo.

I constructed a list of 151 animals. They range from as common as pigeon to as elusive as coelacanth. From as majestic as blue whale to as dangerous as indian cobra. And anything in between:

http://pastie.org/10802014

And set out. Currently sitting at 12 / 151 captured:

-Bison
-Field mouse
-Fox
-Hedgehog
-Kingfisher
-Mallard duck
-Moose
-Pheasant
-Pigeon
-Squirrel
-Stork
-Swan

And 5 more 'seen'.

I've created an application for my phone to keep track of them (a real life Pokedex if you will). Now I'm preparing for a 2 week journey to the mountains, where I'll be hunting for wolves and bears (as safely as I can, obviously).

What do you think about this project of mine?

Gotta catch'em all!
>>
>>25988742
Try finding the elusive mountain lion or black bear next. Those are hard to come by.
>>
>>25988742
pretty cool idea, what rules you got about zoos and such? i imagine that could make things very easy
>>
>>25988761
>Only a wild animal would count, so no pets, no zoo
>i cant read
>>
>>25988760
Not on my list, but I will take pictures of any animal I encounter.

>>25988761
As I stated,

"Only a wild animal would count, so no pets, no zoo."
>>
>>25988764
>>25988767
>me in charge of reading
what about safaris? or animal tours where do they come under?
>>
>>25988772
by tours i mean like whale watching and stuff
>>
>>25988772
Safaris are ok. If it's good enough for a proper wildlife photog, it's probably more than good enough for me.
>>
>>25988778
cool what do you do if you come across an animal not on your list would you catch it anyway?
i can imagine you would end up finding quite a bit of other very rare fauna
>>
>>25988784
It was REALLY hard to keep my list at 151. There are plenty of other animals I want to take picture of. I'm definitely taking picture of any animal I see.

They don't count towards the 100% completion, but I will still take pics of them.
>>
>>25988791
It's almost like new pokemon are "discovered" in every region!

Anon, you are amazing and inspiring! 10/10 would tag along on your journey.
>>
>>25988791
ah right yeah, were you planning on uploading the pics anytime? would be cool to see them as part of the progress

Feels like the list needs some kind of legendary to be legit, but I'm not sure what would be an irl legendary
Maybe some endangered species?
>>
>>25989481
Loch Ness
Ayyylmao
Dragon
Chupacabra
Bigfoot
Jackalope
>>
>>25989481
well he's got a coelacanth in there, if i remember rightly they're almost impossible to find, it may aswell be counted as a legendary, also no.8 on the list is a basilisk
>>
>>25988742
Cool idea. I'll make a national version for my country with only animals that live in the wold here.

Animals that only live wild in other countries or in captivity won't be included, and animals seen in captivity or in another country won't count as seen/captured even if they are in the national list. Non-native species that do live in the wild will be eligible for the list.

>>25989481
Animals that may be extinct in the wild, or that are just very rare.

>>25989892
There's a real lizard called a basilisk.
>>
Very cool idea.

Also, what type of camera do you use? My old Rebel XT is aging poorly and I'm in the market for a new one.
>>
>>25989481
I've got Coelacanth which is insanely hard to find. No idea if I'll find it EVER. I have okapi, which was considered a hoax by hunters in the early 20 century, due to how elusive it is. I also have greater bird-of-paradise, which lives on top of tall trees in rainforest, and is really hard to get to. Apart from that, many of the animals on the list are quite rare or living in remote places.

>>25989892
Basilisk (Basiliscus basiliscus) is this freaky wizard that runs atop water. Picture related.
>>
>>25988833
I've seen a lot of fox photos and that's a really nice one
>>
>>25990987
Currently I shoot with Canon 7D and a Tamron 150-600 lens. I'm slowly saving up for a prime 400/2.8 L IS USM lens.

I've started this hobby with a compact - Lumix FZ-38, to see if I would have enough will to go through with it for more than couple weeks. It turns out I did.

Thanks! Even though I already have foxes 'captured', I grew to like them. Soon a batch of young pups should pop up at a place I like walking through (foxes breed around February, and the pups start coming out from their dens to bask in sunlight in April-May). I hope I'll get some more cool pictures of them.

Quality thread OP, this is amazing.

Do you mind posting the Seen pics too?

And if you don't mind answering, where do you live? Or are you backpacking the world?

Thanks!

I live in continental Europe. Warsaw, Poland to be exact.

And yeah, I can share the 'seen', but as stated, quality of those pictures is way lower.

Beaver (Castor fiber)
Seen: 04 May 2012

This was one of my first wildlife pictures, taken with the Lumix FZ-38. Technically the picture ain't bad, but you can barely see the animal. I won't be satisfied till I'll get an out-of-water picture of a beaver.

Seen: 07 March 2015

I saw this one on a riverbank. He was on the other side of the river (narrow one but still), and the light was horrendous (it was snowing IIRC). It had a really interesting pattern, probably a mix with escaped lab rats? Saw couple rats with white patches there.

I don't know what it is with ravens, but even though they are fairly common around here, I have yet to take a picture of it that I consider 'good'. This is my most recent attempt.
>>
>>25991026
Yeah, that works, could you, just for autism sake , put those super rare ones at the end of the list, where Mewtwo and Mew would be. That would be pretty cool

That's it. As you probably noticed, my 'Seen' list is smaller than my 'Captured' one. I'm slowly running out of animals I can see locally (even for bison I had to travel about 200km). Animals left that I can find without leaving my country. Most of them living in the mountains, where I'm going for a 2-3 weeks photohunting trip this summer:

-Axolotl
-Black woodpecker
-Brown bear
-Carp (heh)
-Chamois
-Death's head moth
-Deer
-Hoopoe
-Eagle-owl
-Fire salamander
-Honey bee
-Hoopoe (wait a second, I've actually got picture of it. shitty, but still. SEEN! 25 August 2014)
-Ladybird (also seen! 06 September 2014)
-Long-eared bat
-Mantis
-Mole
-Otter
-Raccoon
-Seal
-Wolf

And here is my 'Pokedex'. Gotta work on the UI one day.

Each entry has woefully underdeveloped 'Details' page. But it does take you to wikipedia, and shows the location of animal on map. Could be useful if somebody else would want to take a picture of something, they could take a look at your Pokedex and know the area in which certain animals appear.
