I actually found Gates to have the best set of characters by far. Helps that they kept the side cast smaller, but more focused and developed and made them stay relevant throughout the story. I think I cared for them more than anyone in Explorers minus the special episodes.
I'd say the Gates partner's a pretty underrated bro too. Got off to a shaky start by just accepting a name from someone he just met, and the hints at his somewhat shady past were never explored at all, but unlike the Super partner (and even the Explorers partner to an extent), I was never wondering 'Ok, why should this annoyance here be my friend?' Also helps that he's the only partner to have a goal other than some variant on an explorer, which is about as default and mundane as it gets within games like these. Also had my favourite development whenThe partner was hesitant to summon you back, given that he'd be forcibly ripping you from your old life, friends and family by doing so. He realised that his desire for 'you' to stay with him forever was kind of selfish.

It's pretty bad in most circumstances(when you start in a corner), but when you start in the middle it's okay. Also, if you combine it with the skill that maps out the layout of the floor, you can oftentimes eliminate most of the rooms by deduction. Palkia, I believe, gets these two skills and the one that lets him bust down walls, which is pretty good for finding the stairs.
I should also mention that when the arrow points cardinally, it's very easy to find the stairs because it means you're lined up with them.
But it is a dick move that they use the word "exactly".

I mean, I guess I can see that a character originally seen as a player stand-in having their own character may not sit well with people. I didn't mind it, though, because that's how the partners in past games reacted to the player leaving. Sure, they could have just not done that whole twist, but it's ultimately their story and "sacrifices" like this are necessary for them to keep it that way.

You guys bring up good points. I tried my hand at writing a couple of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon stories a few weeks ago, would anybody like to read? It's about a Riolu who goes and plays explorers with her friends.It's an introduction to her character and I intend to take it further than slice of life, but that's what the first story is for now.
