Ash has to go through several rounds in the League, he wins becoming the Kalos League Champion. Then has to go through another tournament of 5 trainers in the Champion League before he's Champion Master.

If you win through the entire tournament of the league you get a Trophy are are crowned the Kalos League Champion, signifying it's end.
In Master Class, you would only be the winner of the whole tournament if you won the whole way through like the league. You can't say "Well she won in the semi's, so she's the winner of the tournament." She didn't win the "trophy" so to speak so she lost the tournament in the finals.

What I'm pointing out here is that Serena won the bracket portion which involve the other competitors attempting the same spot (like Contests and leagues).
