I honestly think everyone blows this matter way out of proportion. Yes, it was unfair, but if you thought Ash was going to win, then you need your head examined. At the time, it was the biggest Diabolus Ex Machina they had done. It has since been outdone, but it was never as bad of a situation as most make it out to be. If anything, it was Ash's finest hour, and remains the peak of his achievements.
I distinctly remember when this happened, I was even there, one of the two times I actually got up early to watch the raw as it was happening. I don't know about here, or even if this board existed back then, but on forums, I'm pretty sure that more people cheered for this episode than the ones that slammed it for the blatant cock block. We knew it was coming. We knew it for months. Those of us that had been watching the anime for a long time knew it was a foregone conclusion. Why are so many people upset about this? Could've fooled me. Unova is the only arc in which the changing of seasons is apparent thanks to the presence of Deerling and Sawsbuck. All of the others have no cue that the seasons change at all. The only immediately apparent passage of time that I am aware of is whenever they give the time until the League happens after the 8th badge. I think I once found out if put together, this time by itself is still less than a year. For Unova, it should've meant another season change, but it never happened, so I don't know if time even really exists for this world or not.
