The Pokemon anime as it stands is an overly light hearted show with the typical ''Pokemon of the week'' formula it always had. The stories conclude, a new one starts, and while there is an overarching narrative, it typically ends with a big tournament or something.
I mean an actual adventure with a shonen like premise. Episodes ending on cliffhangers, and a large focus on a smaller cast of characters instead of constant 'character of the day' shit.

Yeah, occasionally the show will switch to a strict story for like 10 or so episodes, but at the end the reset button flips, everything goes back to normal, and eventually Ash moves on to a new region.

BUT THE FORMULA IS NOT THAT ANYMORE. HOW HARD IS THAT TO UNDERSTAND.

The current anime has handled team flare extremely well aswell as Ash and the gang.
They even have a side series called "The mega evolution specials" that follows another protagonist named Alain. Extremely interesting character that used to be Sycamore's assistent and is now aiming for becoming the strongest mega user so he can protect the ones he cares about. It follows him battling the primals together with Champion Steven, his growing liking to a girl named Manon and a lot more.
This guy is Lysandre's puppet and is doing all he says. He battled Mega Rayquaza and the primals because Lysandre told him since he needed an energy source that made Rayquaza able to mega evolve.
This guy is set up to become Ash's strongest Rival.
This series set up Team Flare extremely way and is way of your bullshit formula. And this is just for this series. I'm not even going to bother with the main series. That you must find out on your own.

As a counterargument, I'll simply say this.
No matter what happens in this series, this show is DESTINED to return to form after whatever little action arc they have going. That's my point. You say this is for XYZ only, right? Well there we go. 80% of this series so far has been formulaic ''filler'' if you will, and, like all the other mini arcs before it, this little narrative will end, Ash will get a change of clothes, and everything will turn out fine.
You can give me examples of what this show is doing NOW, but that doesn't change or alter whats been set in stone. Whatever these 20 or so episodes does will NOT change the show in the long run, and doesn't magically erase the 500 episodes before.
