Pokemon can only say their name. Am I the only one who thinks this is completely stupid?
>>
all that means is they can't talk back when you're fucking them
>>
>>24847736
No true.

>>
It's an artifact from the anime when Pokemon were actually somewhat animal-like.
>>
>>24847736

Typically speaking, only the cute ones say their names.

The more beastly/monstrous ones like Charizard growl and roar, then you have the telepathic ones like Lucario and legendaries who use their telepathy to speak human language.

>>24847791
If you listen closely, charizard yells "lizardon".

It makes it easier for professors to give new pokemons their names

This. Its seriously part of Game Freak's secret sauce.
>>
If you really want to think about it, they were named based on the sounds they make.

It'd be like calling dogs "woof." Or more accurately I guess differentiating dog breeds by sound.
>>
>>24847736
Mewtwo talk.
>>
>>24847736

pikachu's VA does more with those three syllables than most VAs with an entire language

You gotta hand it to her.

Wouldn't you get tired of voicing the same characters after, like, two decades (lookin' at you, rica)?

This guy knows what's up.
>>
That's only in the anime. They make animal noises in the games or have names that sound vaguely similar to their cries so that they still sound like animal noises.

Oh, come on. In most of the games legendaries make all sorts of weird cries before you battle them.

Uh, no. I personally like to think of it the other way around, where the professors in the beginning were so stupid that they just decided to name the pokemon after the sounds they make, and then it just ended up being tradition over time. Also, I like to think of it like this one Far Side cartoon, in whicjh we see the names that we give dogs, and then the names they give themselves. After all, these sound that they make could very well just be special language that only they're meant to understand, similar to how dogs bark and cats meow. We only know so much about those sounds, and personally I think we shouldn't have been curious in the first place.

In Japan, lots of things are named after the sounds they make... So it might actually be the other way around.

Except animals like dogs use mostly body language, tones, volume, and emotion to communicate. For example, a dog appearing rigid, still, staring at you, and silent means he's about to fuck you up. Long, wailing howls means the dog is nervous or bored.

Animals like parrots can be taught human languages to the point where they don't just mimic, but can communicate with their handlers.

It makes more sense that professors made up names like Pikachu because it is in fact a rodent-like animal that shoots electricity from its body, rather than 'dur it says Pikachu sometimes'.

Pokemon saying their names was for marketing.
>>
>>24847736
No, it's a completely fucking retarded invention of the ashnime. It's not so bad in Japanese since the sounds are closer to onomatopoeias, but in English it's stupid as hell.
>>
>>24849051
This.
>>
I remember that in the spanish version of FRLG the three legendary birds say "Artic" when you talk to them yeah zapdos and moltres say "Artic"
>>

You must hate whippoorwills and chickadees.
>>
>>24847736
Of course not. It sounds absolutely fucking retarded, makes no sense in-universe and I love the way the trailer for BW2 and all of Origins handled Pokemon sounds instead.
>>
>>24847747
damn red was a fucking retard then again just by looking at his face he did look like he had Down Syndrome.
>>
>>24847880
Technically several birds have distinct cries that are the origin of their names in some languages. It's just a lot more common in this particular fantasy world.
If it bothers you, try to imagine their actual cries being somewhere between the in-game sounds and anime voice acting. Not quite like a human speaking words in a Roman alphabet and American accent, but close enough to make an onomatopoeia.
>>
The from the games I ignore, they just use their cry. It's really assanine that in the ashnime they say their names. Plus, the telepathy is pretty retarded, too. The only good thing about origins is the voices.
