For example, Charizard's name is derived from the words "charbroiled" and "wizard"
dusclops
probably dusk and cyclops
Excadrill is taken from Excalibur and escadrille.
Charizard = Char + Lizard.

Electrode:
Derived from the words "elect" and "rode". This is because when you catch one you are effectively electing, or, CHOOSING it to be on your team, and "rode" because it's so fast that you can never comment on it riding next to you, only having enough time to say "it rode past".

"Landorus-T"
The "Land" part refers to "rocks", which originally come from the land of the earth. This refers to rock slide, which is the best move landorus has access to.
The "-orus" part is a reference to "ORAS", the best games so far in the Pokémon series
Gengar's name comes from "Genesis" and "gargoyle"

No, that's Serena if she becomes a Nobody.
Trubbish = trash + rubbish, just like the Gen from which it was introduced.

Cryogonal is derived from cry (because it's the only genderless Pokemon to learn attract outside of Mew, so it gets lonely when it can't find a mate), ogon (backwards nogo since taking physical hits with it is a nogo), and al (from Al Gore who famously brought global warming, and thus the decrease in snowflakes, which is what Cryogonal is based on, into the public's eye)

Honchkrow
"H-conch k row"
Conch because that is the shape his hat has. K-row is a type of fertilizer which is 23% K2O and 8% sulfur, and it is very soluble and bioavailable for plant nourishment; one could say that it's super effective at growing plants, which indeed Flying is super effective against the Plant (Grass) type.
The H-replacement on conch could mean a number of things and is hotly disputed amongst the Pokemon etymological community here at Bulbapedia. It could mean an acidic compound with a hydrogen attached; this is likely because Honchkrow is a Dark type and so has easy access to STAB Assurance, a move which makes a bad situation worse. And as the expression goes, making a bad situation worse is to "rub acid in the wound".
"H" is also the symbol for the Higgs-Boson, an elementary particle in subatomic physics. Honchkrow, similarly, is the smallest Dark-Flying type.
Another possible explanation is Hentai-conch, but there is little evidence to support this.
infernape is infernal rape
Zangoose comes from "san" which is 3 in japanese, making reference to the third gen. Goose is because it's a goose. The Z is because it's getting a mega in pokémon Z
Slakoth is actually a combination of "slak", another form of "slag", and "KotH"
Golem
Goat+Problem
>>24741743
It's a pun for "jack+off" because sloths are like potheads who only smoke weed and "jackoff"
snorlax comes from "snore" because it sleeps a lot, and "lax" because it takes ex-lax for its severe constipation
venusaur is an std reference one of the devs got one morning. he woke up and complained that "my penis sore"
that + the saying "if she smokes she -pokes-" inspired the videogame we all know today
Duosion is a reference to the creator's sons that constantly battled each other.

Dialga comes from dial, a reference to the first episode of the johto anime "Don't Touch That Dial!" foreshadowing with its power over time that we would be going back to the past as seen with HGSS. The ga comes from gahhhhhhhh, a screaming noise such as the one made during its signature move roar of time.
Palkia is a combination of P, hall, and kia. Palkia is the deity of space, and hallways connect far apart spaces. P replaces the first letter due to phospholipid heads being standardly represented as spheres, much like the gems in its body. Similar to hall, kia is included as it is a car company and cars are used to travel between very far apart spaces. Kia was chosen specifically as it is a korean car company, and as Gamefreak favored Dialga over Palkia (note Palkia is weak to Dialga's signature move while Dialga takes neutral damage from Palkia's), they gave it the fitting name of a company they didn't like, due to the long standing rivalry between the two east asian nations.
Caterpie's name is derived from "catering" and "pie"
Stealth Rock is derived from the Japanese saying, "ニースのミームはあなたに感謝", translated roughly to be "let he who is without birds cast the first stone". Being 'without birds' is to be the stealthiest, as birds are noisy and flap about ブロッコリー (willy-nilly).

Ledyba
"le-dy-ba"
-ba refers to the onomatopoeiac phrasing of the common domestic sheep's cry, a reference to Ledyba's sheep inspiration.
"dy" has a number of inspirations. Dy is the periodic table shorthand for Dysprosium, which is the 66th element, possibly referring to the number of legs Ledyba has (66). Ledyba is #165 in the National Pokedex, and the 165 isotope of Dysprosium is a metastable isomer with a half-life of 1.257 minutes (75.42 seconds). It is also a metal which could refer to Ledyba's ability to learn Hidden Power Steel.
Dy is also uncommonly used as an abbreviation for 1,4-Dioxane, a commercial solvent which is a 6-membered ring structure. With a typical ball model structure, it looks convincingly like Ledyba itself:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a3/1%2C4-Dioxane-3D-balls.png/130px-1%2C4-Dioxane-3D-balls.png
The final suggested origin of the "dy" Ledyba's name is that of a Deputy, shortened to Dy. From Ledyba's pokedex entry:
>When the weather turns cold, lots of Ledyba gather from everywhere to cluster and keep each other warm.
Much like townsfolk of the old west accumulated to deputies in cold times.
This is further supported by other Pokedex entries for Ledyba:
>Ledyba communicate using a fluid that they secrete from where the legs join the body. They are said to convey feelings to others by altering the fluid's scent.
>It is very timid. It will be afraid to move if it is alone. But it will be active if it is in a group.
Typical of the activities and behaviors of real-life deputies.
Le comes from French, the masculine form of the english word "the". The pokemon is thus "The dysprosium/1,4-dioxane/deputy sheep" in full english.

Gulpin
"gull-pi-n"
Gull refers to birds. Seagulls, whatever kind of gull. Gulpin itself is first encountered in Hoenn near Wingulls.
pi is an irrational constant, and also the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Gulpin from a 2D perspective is very much so circular.
-n ties in with the previous point, in that Gulpin is a 3D shape (due to its introduction in the third generation) and so would include "n" amount of circles stacked on top of each other to produce Gulpin's ultimately spherical shape.

Vileplume was named after the famous Children Story writer Vilep Heiki and the Plume, an American book publisher company.
Dusclops was named after the Dakota United Soccer Club, following the theme of naming Dusclop's family for their prowess
in Soccer and Ops, an ancient Roman goddess of Fertility.
Drifloon (Nool-fird in reverse) is a pun on Fir'd, the action of being trapped in the branches of a Fir and the suffix -loon, from Balloon.
The inspiration for Psyduck's name can be found if you swap the first two syllables, getting Duck-Psyd. This is a rhyme of the beginning of popular YouTuber's DarkSydePhil's username. He is also the inspiration for Psyduck's usual uselessness.

>Bisharp
A clever combination of the slang term "bish," the African American pronunciation of "bitch" (a word used fairly frequently in the Negro community) and "harp," a classic musical instrument known for its beautiful sound.
The African American roots of the term "bish" are what inspired Bisharp's Dark-type. Likewise, the harp is often made using metal, inspiring Bisharp's Steel-type.

Diancie.
Dian + Cie
"Dian" refers to the late Princess Diana, the Welsh princess who was known for her lavish jewelry (hence the rock typing.) Wales also has a rich deep history of faery lore, which explains the fairy typing.
"Cie" refers to Ciel, the French word for sky. It has similar connotations to the English word "Heaven".
So basically it means "Heavenly Princess Diana", or "Princess Diana in Heaven."
