We've had annual New Year Specials since the series started, with I think only one exception.
So yeah, it's happening.

Well all the tsunderes are like that, sweet/scary is not my favorite mix, i don't think sweet and cheerful girls are boring at all, they warm my heart everytime.
So what did all the Mistyfags think of Seyana?
Far less Misty fans and Pokeshippers are watching the show than when AG and DP were airing, so you don't see that much Serena hatred from Mistys if you would if she were introduced a decade ago.
If Serena came 10 years ago instead of May or Dawn, her character would literally be torn to shreds by angry Pokeshippers. Just think about how they reacted when May replaced Misty, and multiply it by 100 because of Serena's canon crush. Back then they were scared that May was, "stealing Ash away from Misty" so just imagine if we had a girl with a big crush like Serena.

For the most part (Not everyone), we all agree about that Ash is a terrible character, ok. Whether by bad writers or any other reason. He is a bad character.

Most people who ship Misty with Ash are still die-hard Pokeshippers almost all of which stopped watching the anime when Misty left. Most of these are female fans.
People who ship Ash with Serena are people watching XY currently, like Serena and her crush on Ash, or just want Ash to get a blonde cutie to wrap up his story.
Many people also shipped Ash with May or Dawn between the two. At one point Advanceshipping rivaled Pokeshipping in popularity in the early AG days, and that's why Misty fans were always bitter. Pearlshipping got popular due to Ash and Dawn's interactions and people liking them together.

It is true though. Many current Amourshippers are comprised of people who shipped Ash with May or Dawn previously when the older seasons were airing. There is a lot of overlap with these ships. Of course not everyone did as some never shipped till Serena, but considering this is over a decade a lot of people shipped Ash with some female lead previously over the years.
Its really mostly only Pokeshippers who refuse to pair Ash up with anyone besides Misty. That's why there are no ship wars between Advance/Pearl/Amour shippers, we're all indifferent and don't make petty squabbles over female leads in the anime.

Earlier on I really had a problem with Serena's dullness. But as time has passed I've come to realize that I'm fine with Serena just being a waifu, because I feel like I "got my fill" of what I wanted with the past girls already. If I want to watch girls who actually battle, have more dynamic personalities and actually do things I can always rewatch AG and DP.

I wonder how the fandom would have reacted if both Misty and Brock left the anime for good at the end of Johto, and Brock didn't come back. If that had happened I think everyone would have known from the start Ash would get new travel companions every series and the old ones would never return.
I think it was Brock's return that tricked Misty fans into thinking she could return too, hence the last decade of debates in the fandom. Had they both left at the same time it'd be a different story.
