The whole love thing isn't a total asspull considering we've known since ep 2 that Froakie had issues with multiple previous trainers and specifically chose Ash for some reason. Besides it's not meant in some "Ash shares a love with Froakie that's completely different from his bond with any other mon", it's just that he was able to love Froakie in general while also being able to make Froakie stronger, and that'll allow this particular Froakie to become something great.

How were they supposed to do that when no one knew everything about its past? Sure they coulda made Sycamore know but that woulda only meant more info for ep 2 and nothing for in between. And Frogadier is such a reserved Mon, even in the latest ep it didn't seem to care much about its past getting brought up. And even if it WANTED to talk about it it can't fucking talk. It's just complicated, bringing in psychic is the most effective way to clear up Frogadier's past and one of the gym leaders is one, but they couldnt have her appear sooner.

It's about target audiences.
The best example is probably Death Note, which creators said they shopped their story to a shonen magazine because a seinen audience would be expecting a heavy focus on moral debate and philosophy that they had no interest in writing.
