TotT: If your character was a gym leader, what type would it specialize in?
So, Milky-anon here, I've been fleshing out some OCs for fun.
Prof. Joy: a daughter of the Nurse Joy family who became interested in alternative medicine and methods of Pokemon healing. She went on a Pokemon journey and is now a Pokemon Professor, researching ways to make bitter herbs and roots more palatable to Pokemon. Her research lab is in the back of a cozy tea shop, which sells distilled berry, root, and herb teas. She is a cheerful and energetic Professor who chatters at her Pokemon while milling around the shop. She's friendly and welcoming to all, but very picky about new trainers and who she allows into the lab.

He's not the best or strongest trainer around, but he has the support of a great deal of people and is the only up-and-coming trainer with ambition. Cocoa:
I posted her preliminary story a couple threads back and got a lot of great negative feedback that really helped me develop her as the "anti-hero."
Cocoa is a fierce and merciless Pokemon battler who probably would be the next Champ, if it weren't for her attitude. When she started out her Pokemon journey, she dominated other trainers and gained a superiority complex. Further down the road when battles became challenging, and she began to lose, she became cynical and stopped journeying rather than toughen up. She joined "an Evil Team" for a while and worked for them as a thief in the big city.
After a mission to steal a package from the courier, Milky, the two of them began a cat-and-mouse game of chase throughout the regions. Frustrated at not being able to fulfill her mission, Cocoa also began to remember the thrill of a good challenge and fun battles.
After a particularly long, exhausting, and fulfilling battle on a mountainside, Cocoa agreed to give up on her mission and quit the Evil Team. She and Milky reconciled as battle partners.
Currently she is a guide through caves and mountain passes, and is the only customer who gets supplies from Milky for free.
She has a detached and stoic exterior but is secretly having fun on the inside. Her personality really comes out during fierce battles (it is the only time to see her laugh).

Both her design and team are in the works, I know this is a different design than is in the OC character sheet. Her story is the same though-
Started a Pokemon journey, realized it wasn't for her, went home in defeat, and began running grunt delivery service for a Professor. She realized that running deliveries was a way to still have a journey without the high pressure Gym challenge, and started her own courier business.
She deliveries mail and packages to trainers in remote locations, which can sometimes include Leaders or Professors who are out researching. She's had to become a strong trainer in her own right, due to battling strong wild Pokemon way out in the wilderness, and battling strong trainers who had to be "convinced" to be her customer.
She is mellow and easy-going, with a relaxed and sleepy personality. She often wanders around and naps in weird places.
She's very serious about doing her job, and more so about getting paid. That's when the "don't fuck around" scary smile comes into place.

Rolland: A confident and cheerful guy who spends his time mountain biking. He's happy to live a fun, simple life and has very little ambition to be strong.He's Cocoa's romantic interest, and tends to be biking around where she's guiding. She's rejected him before (as usual keeping her true emotions secret); luckily Rolland doesn't give up easily.

Alison would like to have a gym that specializes in fucking with speed. She would educate trainers on how they can deal with opponents who are faster than them through attacks like Icy Wind, statuses like paralysis, and moves like Trick Room. And of course moves that boost a pokemon's own speed like Quiver Dance!
She has a rival/BFF who runs a Tailwind themed gym and she is pretty dedicated to reverse engineering his strategy.

Been doodling all my pokemon that have showed up in RP so far.
I figure that individualizing pokemon by their personality and movesets is as important as individualizing their trainers by their personalities and looks. We can't really alter pokemon appearances too dramatically but I kinda-sorta added the cracked texture that some of the mushrooms in my front yard get when they grow fast.

You fight a lot of adults early in the game with just a few pokemon at low levels. They aren't necessarily youngsters on early routes but they are out there, probably because most don't get their first pokemon from the same professor as you, if from a professor at all

I'm fine with OCs having any number of legendaries there are multiples of as long as the trainer isn't like, a child. I'd expect a character with a legendary to be very experienced and at least a grown adult if not a veteran. Have a story for the encounter. My character has a Cresselia and it was a majorly complicated event in her life including a battle that lasted two days (and no sleeping).
I'm fine with characters having witnessed any number of legendaries.

In my opinion, legendaries have different tiers depending on how unique they are. You have Pokemon who are on the most part extremely powerful, very hard to even meet or very important lore-wise like:
>Lugia and Ho-oh
>Weather trio
>Creation trio
>Tao trio (who, at least two, require a hero to control them)
>XYZ trio
>Regigigas (blame Slow Start)
>Mewtwo
>Deoxys
>Most event Pokemon
Not impossible to capture per se but requiring a lot of requirements to even encounter one and/or who are lore-wise extremely powerful due to their feats. Then you got your very rare Pokemon and minor legendaries, hard to meet Pokemon who are proven to be more than one, which would include almost the rest of legendaries. Shaymin and Diancie included considering is proven to be of considerable amounts but in very secluded places.
I see using legendaries as a last resort measure, otherwise you're just curb stomping your way through everything. Like in the end of Black AdventuresWhite refuses to use Zekrom on her journeys because she k knows it'll be unfair

All the more reason to use them in a trainer tournament. A trainer skilled enough to catch and train something with god-tier powers in a tournament meant to assess trainer skill should demonstrate to viewers their skill by using their legendary pokemom.
Obviously it gives them an advantage, but in the pokemon world they have earned that advantage through significant hard work, just like people using pokemon they carefully bred and raised.

I don't really know how you guys expect to keep a thread only on certain days when we're located on a slowish board.
If you mean letting it 404 after the weekend and then making a new one, that just seems annoying and pointless since it'd just be a thread with maybe 30 posts maximum on average.

I do like the concept of an OC thread, just that it kind of sucks that discussion, presumably, is mainly in the IRC, rather than the thread itself.
So it's a pain for me to get any discussion going, since I do like seeing what input people have on the Pokemon lore, and how people made their trainers. ... Just that little activity seems to happen.

What I never liked about original Galactic members was that they rarely were named after Celestial objects.
In fact I only recall Io from one manga and Pluto being changed to Charon in English version. There was also that Cipher Admin Venus or K-2 being called "Uranus" by fans.
You could name her Marduk, this is how Babylonians called Jupiter and their Jovian deity.

Confusing would be keeping track of levels and simulating battles, giving each pokemon specific natures and EVs (and keeping track of what they fought to determine said EVs, or what out-of-battle training was given) especially considering most of us involved time skips so theres no written record of said training....

I'm not sure she needs to be one of the Joys. It seems unnecessary, she could just be someone interested in alternative medicine, the Joy connection doesn't accomplish anything aside from shoehorn the character into the canon. But if you like it, that's fine, I guess. It's not a deal-breaker or anything.
For her team, I would have expected a preponderance for grass and poison Pokemon, to mirror her herbalist tendencies. A Cleric of some sort would make sense, too; Florges or Wigglytuff or something. Not Chansey or Audino, because those are so closely related to the Nurse Joys, and an alternative medicine Joy ought to have an alternative to the standard companion.
She should also probably have a first name. Wess didn't just call her Professor, did he?

I don't like the Team Evil backstory bit. It seems sort of forced, for the sake of making her villainous.
Her team is underwhelming. Aerodactyl as a foil for Archeops is good, and Pancham to reinforce the thief thing is fine, but that's all that stands out. Girafarig and Cacturne seem meh. From her depiction as a super strong, assholey trainer, I would have expected some more fierce and intimidating Pokemon, like Haxorus or Bisharp or something. Weavile, Gyarados, Gengar, Gliscor-- there are a lot of strong, dickish Pokemon that would seem a better fit.

The idea of a courier as a character is pretty cool. I'd imagine a fighting style based on speed, which is supported by Archeops, Luxray, and sort of Klefki. I'm a little surprised she doesn't have a Delibird assistant, though. I mean, for fuck's sake. The only bad bit, really, is the "don't fuck around scary smile" part. Makes her seem like a shitty anime character. You could just say she hounds people about payment, she doesn't need to have a trigger that reverses her personality.

Yep. All the time, actually. The hard rule is "don't eat anything you've caught," because that seems like a dick move, and "don't eat anything too humanoid or crazy poisonous," but there really aren't many regular animals in the Pokemon world. There are examples in the beginning of that being the case, but they've been slowly phased out. It's the circle of life. Likewise, the threat of a Pokemon eating you is more than 0. Humans, while not the greatest source of food for a predator, are sufficient for a meal. Especially if the predator is provoked by a battle. If a trainer loses, are they just going to give the wild 'mon a few bucks and go on their way?
Maybe I like realism too much for Pokemon RP stuff, but if your trainer isn't eating Pokemon, what the hell are they and their team eating? Fruits and vegetables spoil too quickly to bring on a journey. Some Pokemon are purely carnivorous, and might not accept certain substitutes. How much kibble can one person carry to feed a team of six for a week? I prefer for it to be a natural process and kind of a touchy subject, depending on the person.
