I need help.

I want to write Ash as NOT an idiot. Someone who's intelligent about the world, knows about girls and has went through puberty, and just isn't the lovable moron the anime paints him to be.

I'm basically taking inspiration from Gougeru's (Gogeru?) little comics where he bones all of his female traveling partners or any female character-of-the-day he comes across.

Every time I try to write it, it either comes off as entirely unbelievable or bland. How can I write Ash as an actual character without him looking like an edgy OC with a character named slapped on?

Make him an idiot. Not like, he can't even add 1+1, but make him unknowledgeable to just about just about everything that isn't related to his goals or the things he's experienced in life. Use the world your using to build his experience and knowledge, like before he became a trainer he attended a regular school and wasn't so book smart but when it came to Pokemon studies he aced it all. Giving him a school background sets up potential for understanding the opposite gender (getting "the talk", sex-ed), and if you decide to go the harem route you good make him notice that girls are attracted to him but he won't act on it because he's focused in on his goal to be a Master.

Writers committed to writing begin writing this weekend. This isn't going to be about going crazy or being innovative, but about writing solid material and exploring Pokémon as a world and setting.

Unit 1: Introducing your reluctant protagonist.
Pokémon journey stories naturally begin with somebody who isn't a trainer getting a first Pokémon. In the games, it seems like a culturally natural thing to do. Thus, we have our first opportunity to be creative.
• Imagine your personal protagonist—be it Author Insert or an archetype whose shoes you would like to wear—as somebody who would live in the Pokémon world but doesn't live the cliché lifestyle. You have freedom of choice among the route trainer types seen in the games to guide your design.
• Your MC does not own any Pokémon. Imagine a reason for this, but do not reveal it.
• Open with a scene that indicates without TELLING what kind of person MC is and that unfolds to subject MC to a problem that would be solved by becoming a trainer of a particular (kind of) pokemon.
• Let MC recognize the drawbacks of getting one, and after weighing the options, choose to get the one that is best suiting, or so MC expects. (Let's refrain from legendary/unique, but method of acquisition is your choice. Be interesting.)
• Conclude this unit at the exact moment MC and Starter (in that role) would first make eye contact.

I'm guessing about 1750 words, let's try for a due date of Wednesday sunrise, since this weekend may be a little busy for some. Your hometowns are as follows, determined somewhat randomly but not really.

I don't know yet. We're not there. I have a few ideas. I'll go with the one that looks best when the time to decide comes but act like it was all according to my master plan. The objective is to practice writing, so we have a comfy and familiar setting to shape into something interesting. Worrying about the ending is for mystery novels and mystery novels suck because they only work once.

Maybe MC needs a muscular pokemon to move boulders, or an electric type to guard a garden against birds, or a good swimmer to keep sharpedoes off his ass when he's hanging ten. Focus on the trials and tribulations of the kid to stay in the battle, taunted by the ease of "Oak" and his Slowbro to stay patient. Eventually, he gives up, and "Oak" treats his loyal best friend to his prize, mentioned in the pic. Yes. Maybe it(s species) was released there by other trainers and now is a rare encounter, or MC intends to turn it loose after the job is done and wants it to stand a chance in the wild so MC's bought and imported one that can live in the local habitat, or a spontaneous outbreak happens to be close enough to what MC's looking for, or something cooler than what comes off the top of my mind right now happened. As long as a plot mechanic is interesting to the reader and isn't nonsense that breaks the world's concept, the writer can make it work. The key is that MC doesn't get that pokemon simply because MC decides to have it and Author agrees because that would be Mary Sue writing. MC must either exploit circumstance or create circumstance that leads to said goal.
Working is great. So much free time to think about things to write!

I wonder if it is possible to write a compelling story where the protagonist, or some characters, want to go out their way to solve conflict without having to hurt anybody. The only times they willingly, even if a bit reluctantly, do so is in a controlled environment, or when use of force is absolutely unavoidable.

A discussion about how in Pokemon, you must hurt and suffer to grow stronger and survive, or cooperate with others as a member of a community to work toward a common good.

I was looking at my FF.net profile to see what the fuck I used to be into and I remembered I had a huge story boner for anything done by ReturnToJohto.
Anyone else read his stories Golden Flames and Diamond Fists? I'm fairly sure they were what inspired me to write in the first place, though when i read them again years later they were pretty bad. Compared to how I usually edit, this was done with single skim through at 3AM before I uploaded straight to pastebin. Usually I do the whole 9 yards if it's something that is going on FF. Rewriting sentences, spoken read through to get sentences and grammar correct, etc.

I thought about adding her parents, but decided against it because I was being lazy. That and her character is a ripoff of another character with the same name that I created for another story. Didn't want to borrow so heavily from that story since if I was going to add them in it would have pretty much been a copy/paste scenario.

So I'm trying to make a gym of every type with a challenge that's fun and interesting and tied to the type. Here's what I have so far:

Water:
Set in a group of small islands off the coast. Challenger is given a boat and as much time as they need to find the way to a hidden island where the gym leader waits. Gym leader gives them a hint that they have to follow the current, they have to wait hours/days until an ocean current carrying a lot of Magikarp appear. Sailing along this path leads them to the island.

Dark:
Set in what appears to be an office building in the middle of a busy street, is actually a ninja hideout. Challenger has to navigate the traps and ambushes to try and reach wherever the gym leader is. Also, gym leader looks and dresses just like an ordinary housewife.

Bug:
Challenger has to survive several days in a hostile jungle full of strong wild hungry bug pokemon, with limited supplies. They have to stay stealthy to avoid the stronger pokemon and hunt and gather whatever they can for food and to build shelter. May or may not have an especially dangerous bug pokemon that slowly becomes more active over the course of the challenge, or the gym leader actively tries to hunt down the challenger him/herself.

Psychic:
Completely dark, silent cave. Challenger has to try and listen to the thoughts of the people and pokemon around to navigate.

Flying:
Challenger will be equipped with a glider and have to follow the winds about a series of pillars on top of a high plateau region.

Grass:
Challengers have to navigate a forest and figure out how to get to the gym leader's secret location following a hint from the gym leader, like the water gym, and can also take several days. Not sure what. Maybe they'll have to slowly climb all the trees until one massive one just appears. Or maybe they're given a plant they have to keep moving to different spots to care for until it sprouts and shows them the way.

Fighting:
Trainers will have to fight along with their pokemon against the gym trainees until they are the only one left standing. They'll be provided with a choice of weapon, non-lethal of course.

That's all I really have solid ideas for. Any thoughts/suggestions? For other types, too.

Some others:

Fire: Should be like the water and grass ones, navigating an area to find a hidden place and can take several days. Maybe a volcano.

Ground: Should involve tending the soil, or something related to fertile land.

Ghost:
Involves an actual spooky forest and trying to get through, maybe?

I'm in particular looking for ideas on electric gym. I want to base it around 'information', but I don't know how I'd turn a huge computer datacenter into a fun gym challenge. Or maybe make it similar to Elesa. The challenger has to put on a show for an audience and if they like it, they get through.

I think you're making the scale of the gyms too large. Getting to the leader doesn't need to be some epic journey so much as it is a test of the problem solving abilities of the trainer.

If you are set on the days long endurance/survival challenge ones I suggest you make it only for one gym.

Think about the gym leader, what type of pokemon they use, what kind of lesson they'd want to pass on to your protagonist and what kind of challenge relates to that.

The dark gym tests reflexes, intuition, and enviromental awareness which fits in well with the ninja theme. The fighting gym tests guts, strength and endurance which all fit well with the theme.

The gyms are there to make sure only the crème de la crème make it to the elite 4/pokemon league, leave all the camping stuff to the routes between towns.

Trying to force her pokemon trainer husband into releasing all of his pokemon (it was one of his which he got in a trade/recently caught which did it) led to her divorce.

Any Pokemon with blades/sharp razor appendages would be good then. Scyther, Kabutops etc. Or, hulking massively muscled Pokemon like Nidoking which could shatter and break arms with a single swing. Pincers/claws also work for cutting off body parts, much like the blades/razor like appendages.

Missed opportunity if you choose this path. Have the mothers fears instilled in her daughter from countless talks, videos, headlines, anything where the mother pushes her terrified beliefs onto her daughter. These points could be further enforced when her winning argument would be to take a look at what "Pokemon" did to her.

Have the daughter be afraid of them, or wary so if at some point she battles something similar or that species in general she'd have to find a way to overcome that anxiety.

Growing up being taught that Pokemon are fearsome violent creatures would have an effect on a persons upbringing unless she knew otherwise like she had befriended a Pokemon long ago. If not, and her first real experience is through her starter, make her wary of it and question whether her mother was right or wrong about them.

Finally someone who gets it.

Here's an idea for a plot I had. You tell me if it's any good.

A somber man who freshly moved to a wintery village for reasons unclear, looks to have as brief contact with its inhabitants as is possible.

After realizing how boring it can get inside his home, he sets out to investigate and inspect the village in search of things to do, a bit reluctantly chatting up some citizens and perhaps some of its Pokemon as well.

A thick snowstorm comes up and pretty much keeps him inside for the day. For a while he thinks he can have a relaxing time, but then, things start happening inside the house.

Drawers open, knocks are heard on some of the windows, standard haunted house stuff.

The thing is, it's not haunted. It's actually done by a ghost Pokemon to see what sort of guy he is, how patient he can be before he grows annoyed or scared. The ghost eventually reveals itself by standing, or floating, in a corner he's not looking at, waiting for the man to notice him and to get quick chuckles out of his reaction.

The guy does not joke around when it comes to deterring intruders, so he grabs something blunt and checks the place until he finds the perpetrator. For a split second he thinks of smacking the Pokemon over the head, but immediately stops when he realized it hasn't attacked him.

Paranoid of the chance that it might, he keeps his weapon close and tries to chat up the Pokemon, first with words, but then with gestures, like offering some food and talking to it, even if it does not comprehend what he means.

Over the course of the following days, they're almost unseperable. Not because they're friends, but because the Pokemon won't leave his side, nor will the man go out his way to make it do so.

I'm at loss for how to go on from here.

How do these character-rival pairs sound?

Upbeat ranger girl in-training who want to become a top ranger and help people, likes grass types. Rival is an insecure boy who wants to be powerful to hide the fact that he doesn't know what his real goal for becoming a trainer is, and likes water types.

Naive trainee researcher who is traveling around to gain field experience with Pokemon since he rarely leaves the comfort of the city, likes poison types. Rival is a girl who has been living in the wilds for years since she lost her home, and likes bug types.

Punk kid who comes from the hood and likes acting tough and cocky, likes dark types. Rival is a strange girl who is never bothered by him no matter how hard he tries, and likes fairy types.

Also, for a psychic character who started with a female Ralts I wanted to pair him with a swordfighter girl with a male Ralts to become a Gallade, but I'm not sure how to make her more interesting beyond being very dignified and /fit/.

Huh... so people do those character interview things in-story? That's... weird, somewhat, I guess.

I thought of them of (and as my current experience with them is) like, stuff like character development brainstorms or cross-reviews. Completely out-of-story elements.

Yeah... no. I can symphatize with the feeling.

I personally like the concept of character interviews, as separate things. Ideally as a sort of group effort. Mostly because when you get someone else to ask you questions, most of the time it's stuff that surprises you or does reveal more about the characters. Heck, you get to know your own characters a bit better, and it's an excellent way to develop and practice the idiosyncrasies of each character (voice, style of speaking, manners, etc).

This can be a decent way to get a feel for your characters, but it's best done far away from any published work. As you put it, though, that's actually a pretty good way to practice, especially if you just thought the character up (or haven't written them in a while).

I've had a rough idea for a plot for awhile now, tell me what you think.

It's about the extended lore in OR/AS and XY, Team E and the Infinity Energy which was introduced in them.

Basically every regions villainous organization, Rocket, Aqua, Magma, etc, are all sub-divisions of the larger Team E which is a group the world has never heard of before. Team E lurks in the shadows, using the likes of Team Rocket or Galactic to pull off stunts for it's end game plans while itself remains anonymous. It's different then the smaller Teams in the games though, it's got a foothold within nearly every corner of the Earth rather then a single region.

In the government, the League council, police force, communications companies, energy production and fuel digging. Members of Team E and it's smaller divisions are everywhere.
Archie or Giovanni would be the equivalent of the Pokemon games admins, the mini bosses/higher ranked pawns in Team E and be aware of it's existence. the story would begin with it's discovery.

Which would be as I currently have planned:

The night before his championship battle against Cynthia for the Sinnoh Champion title, Cynthia arrives at where he is staying appearing skittish and paranoid of everything. She tells him, after unplugging every electrical device, shutting the curtains and all because she's completely paranoid, that he has two choices. To hear what she has to say, or for her to leave and he never saw her that night. That if he choose to hear what she has to tell him that his life will more then likely go into jeopardy.

Ash being Ash, takes the red pill. Cynthia tells him that while looking into confidential information for the G-Men, uncovered facts that didn't line up properly and after a lot of digging she dug up the possibility of a large criminal syndicate. Long story short she dug to deep and after learning that the Pokemon G-Men were also a part of this group, she was informed that they knew she knew and that she needed to stop digging or else. Being told she's going to be offed if she breathed a word to anyone, or looked any further, Cynthia basically waited until the last minute when she thought it was safe to come let him know since she was more then sure she was being watched.

She tells Ash that they'll kill her really soon and that he needs to look into this and see how far down the rabbits hole really goes.

Ash does and after they part ways and Ash goes to look into the organization after reading through the documents Cynthia brought to show him, Cynthia is found murdered in her suite.

Basically what follows since this is really long already, is Ash while being branded a killer travels around for awhile until he discovers what Team E is and what their plans are. Then, needing a way to shut them down but unable to trust anyone while being a wanted man, goes to Orre in search for Team Cipher, the one Team which he learned wasn't under E control. After a while they Team up and begin their mission to take down and stop Team E.

Man that was a long write. Thoughts?

But, using an "interview" is a good way to see what kind of person a character you're making is like.

For example, your character is on the typical save the world adventure. Why? And when they answer, keep asking questions until they throw their hands up and go "because I want to, okay?!" And you might have discovered one of your character's values.

Some of the background is similar to the antagonist group in my fic. Mine though has its hands in just Plasma and technically Flare (since the events happen in an alternate universe where Lysandre did not start Team Flare and instead joined this group because of their similar goals.) Also Galactic and Cipher until those teams collapsed. They have their hands in pretty much everything of industry, politics and law on some level, similar to "Team E."

The difference is, they aren't really a villain team in the traditional sense, they're a militant cult instead. It has "divisions" in the sense that it's lead by a council and each member has their own subsection to lead.

The rest of it is pretty different though. The framing device for the plot is a more basic trainer journey instead of a high-level Champion's match, and the investigation of the conspiracy is being carried out by a few non-corrupt detectives (among others) instead of a Champion, at least for now.

The main characters end up teaming up with what's left of Team Rocket, though, since TR knows they cannot survive if this organization's vision for the future becomes reality.

The one thing that I'd say I'm really not a fan of though is the "Ash framed as a killer" thing. I think it probably works better with a different character, but that's up to you.

My plan was to create prompts that respond to the works' needs, thus a prompt cannot be devised until all entries are in. Obviously the short list of ideas is mostly struck out because many were optimistic and expected that there would be more than 1 successful and continuing participants, and I have no right to meddle directly with a single work.
