Ash's development has been him pushing himself because Serena was there filling in the thing he needed.
Alexa makes note of this and she has him snap out of his rut during the rematch, the Korrina gym has him turn to Serena when it all goes bad, and Snowbelle has Ash snap out of his depression. Serena's had the biggest hand in Ash's development as a character while Dawn had the battle, but that was all Ash taking Dawn's ideas and forging them for battle. Dawn didn't actually have any hand in getting Ash out of his depression over Paul beating him.
