I played Vic 2 until a couple of months after the last expansion, I don't think it was that good. I like CK 2 a lot, probably more than I played EU 4. But changing is good and EU4 has really improved since launch, it's probably where Paradox are directing most of their resources for a couple of months now.
If you never played, you should try out, even if it is to give up after a couple of hours.

If you didn't played any other country you'll understand sooner or later. If you try to play as Ottomans, for example, you'll be shat on by minor countries because you can't handle your manpower properly as a new player.
A friend of mine managed to fuck up France and Ottomans as well, I don't know how you new players do it. But after fucking up these 2 countries a couple of time he started to learn how to play. Just keep doing it and you'll do fine. It's also good to do some tutorials or see someone playing on YouTube if you're having a hard time.

I've played one as arussiablob :^), and the start was pretty rough as well, but these problems are of a whole new kind. With Muscovy, it was a question of survival, turning the tides, and bringing the fight to the enemy; with France, it feels like you can grow as much as you want within your initial borders, but expansion is restricted.

As France you just have to win the war with England and spend the rest of your time annexing your vassals and fighting Burgundy at the same time if you want. Also, there's the Burgundian Throne chain event (that fires when they're at war with the Emperor or France, if I'm not mistaken) and you'll get half their territories for free.
The problem of playing within Europe (and thats even worse on HRE) is the agressive expansion. You have to expand slowly unless you want to have all of Europe fucking you hard.

For a group that seems to love grand strategy, why not much Distant Worlds love?
Everything from fighting without needing to go to war (basically just skirmishes) to scraming over a pretty awesome tech tree, to establishing entire penal planets, and even fighting off galtactical invaders.
There a like 50 different resources that need to be mined and managed, supply routes, you can design ships down to thier look and modules, order the nuking of planets, to even sending out death stars to blow them up.

Look in the event textfile of the nation you are playing, important nations have a textfile only for foreignpolicy.
However foreign events that are triggered by the actions of other nations are in the txt of those nations including the events of the reactions of other countries.

I also found out they are the most backward shithole in Europe, with like 0.60% intellectuals.
