Funny you mention that because even though they "cut their fat" off, they still managed to show you how connected the events of their new game, P3, was to what happened in both P1/2. You could see the consequences of their bet ten years later. Even the implications that were may have been some direct influence.
Though it was successful, I don't like how stubborn Hashino is with the old stuff. At least now. It seemed pretty nice with the references and love the old games got in with P3.

Well the base game is the same of course, I was specifically referring to the contrast between the two openings, because it seems emblematic of the sort of direction Persona as a series has been going in.
Comic relief and quirky characters has always been a part of the series, since it is after all a character-focused RPG. But at the same time, if it gets too weighed down by comic relief, that can be a problem.
Like, do we really need a bath scene in every game? Let alone a bath scene where the guys and girls in your group stumble over one another like every other bath scene ever created?
Society is a big part of Persona so socialising is important, but moderation is too.

Depends, I actually enjoyed playing Minato Gear Solid but gameplay aside, probably not. Bath scenes are a meh thing to me. They exist, I don't really care for or against.

Also, saying that he 'cut the fat off' is a huge understatement. If there was a new director for say, SMT5 and he wrote Lucifer out of the story, it would be a big change from establishments in that series. Hardly 'extraneous', they're really important to the structure of these games' universes.

It does look pretty grounded, but the meat of the game could still be just as light-hearted as P4, it's hard to say at this point. The protagonist looks pretty normal and it seems like it'll be the first Persona game in 'Tokyo'.
I just want to see the rest of the main cast first.
Even though I enjoyed the story of P2 the most, I think for the bulk of the audience P3 had a good balance of 'dark' and 'light' moments, bath scenes or no bath scenes.

At the end of the day, it's just up to what Hashino is willing to include, and everyone has their own view of what direction the series should take.
Realistically though, I just want P5 to be pretty serious. Whether they do a remake and add a bunch more 'events' or date-able characters or whatever I don't really care about, but at least take the main vanilla game seriously.

Labrys and Shabrys aren't party members in any game that actually had 'party members', and Jun is from P2, though I'll give you Naoto. And if you're counting Takaya, Jin was Hermit.
My point is that all the examples of party members who were Hanged Man, Death, Devil, Tower, and so on are all from only the first two games. I'd like to see some of those, plus some we haven't had before.
