I think the trailer tries to make it seem like more of a fun film than it really is. It basically jams every scene of Charlotte and Bob partying/having fun into a minute and then rolls title, coming soon.
I think that doesn't really represent what the film was at all, sure the parts of them breaking loose were important, but they certainly didn't define the film.
Alienation is of course a huge part of the film, and shows that whilst it has it's negatives it allows people to be themselves without fear of others judging them because they're unable to understand them anyway.
I still think the lack of direction is important, sure it's never resolved but I feel the message is that everybody feels that at some point in their lifes, even very different characters like a rich famous movie star and a very young girl feel the same feeling. I'm not really sure where you got all those numbers from, I'm actually struggling to believe you: the huge country Stalin governed managed to set up factories and the machinery required to stand firmly on its feet during the Second World War in a matter of years, all done in a time of turmoil and hardship, right after the revolution and a withdrawal from the First World War. The natural resources bit doesn't make that much sense either, since you didn't seem to take climate into account: the border between the USA and Canada is in about the same latitudes as the resort city of Sochi, one of the southern bits of Russia, which, coupled with the extremely continental climate of most of the country, makes for rather unpleasant working conditions. And I've heard nothing of famine in the times of Stalin, bar the war, as I've said, food production was at an all-time high with free meals being availible to the masses in some years. Stalin did fight for education and enhancement of the Soviet people as well, both physically and intellectually: he was the one to order construction of sports grounds in most appartment blocks, along with tables for chess and checkers matches and some educational establishments. Thanks to him the factories held sports competitions of their own, even during the war, which helped inspire people and keep up morale.
