The character portraits are more or less the same as the originals from the PSX, but colouring does make a difference. Even between PSX IS and PSX EP the in-game character portraits look different, but for the PSP remakes the full art and cut-in stuff was all new.
They had the same combo in P2 originally, Soejima did the line-drawing and Doi did the colouring, while it was Kaneko who did the original character design.

Are there any skills to look out for for recovering MP? It's annoying to run out and have a crippled team for the rest of the fight. The only one I see so far is on King Frost and I'm not strong enough to fuse him yet.

Yeah, Divines have Blood Wine that gives MP to the team. And Fallens have Sacrifice which heals a bit of HP and MP whenever they kill a unit. There's probably more.
In case you didn't know, every type of demon has the same racial skill. So every Divine has Blood Wine and ever Fallen has Sacrifice. Every Beast has Animal Leg and so on.

Eventually you'll start seeing demons with MP recovery Auto and Racial skills. I think Tyrants have the MP recovery Racial, but you need to crack the MP recovery Auto from demons in order to set it to your human party members. There aren't really standard alignment choices. But each day is, as you've probably noticed, divided into 30 minute chunks and every time you go to an event time progresses by 30 minutes.
Later, you'll be really short on time and will have to choose between saving <x> or helping <y> do something. It kind of develops from there. Just help out people whenever you can but prioritize the characters that you like. Depending on what you do at certain times you'll be given different route choices at (slight spoilers here)the end of the 6th day

Oh boy, you'll change your tune when you realise that you have to pause the battle (or just leave auto-battle off entirely), open the strategy menu, and select your fusion spell(s) every single fucking time you want to cast one. And god help you if you want characters not participating in the fusion to perform their actions first - you have to open the turn order menu and rearrange them manually. After setting everything up you can't then go into autobattle and have it repeat - for some inexplicable reason the fusion spells won't cast and the order may change - you have to repeat this every single battle round. How this UI abomination managed to make it past play-testing in not one but TWO games absolutely boggles the mind.
That said, I still think EP is better on the gameplay front than IS simply because it's actually possible to die - characters seem to take much more damage than on IS "hard" mode, which was so pathetic that I actually thought it was bugged at first. At least, that's the case so far - EP is the one Persona game I've yet to finish.

Also, I'm playing/re-playing through all of the main Persona games and, though I'm personally having fun, I wouldn't recommend any of them to anyone - each game has glaring flaws which drag it down to mediocrity territory.

Depending on how the difficulty for EP PSP is balanced, the extra content and fixed interface for the port may make it the only Persona game that's actually truly good. And, of course, it's the one that most of us can't play because it's not in English...

Nah, it's far from what I'd like it to be.
It's a mere shadow of PSX version when it comes to music.
It's mostly mono and only slithly over 1/3 the number of tracks from PSX.

It's because the PSP version uses 1 track for every overworld theme that would have existed in the PSX version. You can't make it use more tracks than are already allowed.
