Don't get me wrong, his personality in DDS1 was fine. Some might even say good. But in DDS2 you spend the first quarter trying to find him and the second and third quarters fighting against him. It's pretty senseless.

And don't get me started on the EXTREMELY half-assed secret Heat as a party member thing

>>
>>79086810

you're wrong on pretty much all accounts
>>
>>79087073
No I'm not. In DDS1 he was an ally who kind of had a rivalry thing with Serph but begrudgingly went along with your plans for Sera's sake.

In DDS2 he's straight up antagonistic, EVEN when you have Sera in your party. It's dumb.
>>
>>79086810
It's not senseless at all, really. The game had been hinting at mounting tensions between Serph and Heat since around Coordinate 136 in DDS1, so it's not like it came out of nowhere or anything. I mean, its entirely likely that they still would have eventually fought to the death even if Heat wasn't taken in by Madam Cuvier, since they would've all discovered the truth at some point anyway.

As for the secret party member thing, what was so half-assed about it?
>>
>>79087234
isn't that because he was told how fucked up serph used to be
>>
>>79087398
That and he'd mutated horribly because of the corrupt data in the EGG.
>>
>>79087398

Yeah when you beat Vritra and Serph comes back Heat tells him he'll settle things with Serph where it all began and you meet him where Real heal died
>>
I haven't played the games, but in the novel, Heat constantly undermines Serph to the point that I'm not surprised his game counterpart is at odds with him.
>>
>>79087398
Yeah but it's kind of hypocritical and pointless because

a. The Serph that he knows isn't even the "real" Serph
b. he's just data too

I mean, I can get hating the OG serph, but the Serph in DDS2 is different.

>>79087373
>As for the secret party member thing, what was so half-assed about it?

He doesn't have his own Mantra progression (he just inherits Roland's) and he has nothing special going for him at all, not even any unique abilities or anything. In the US version his VA isn't even translated; he speaks Japanese.
>>
>>79087594
Heat's not a real logical person. He reacts to thing emotionally, which is why I don't have any trouble believing that he would conflate the two Serphs in his mind.
>>
>>79087594

Actually it's kind of weird that you don't bump into the Solar data of Real Serph and Heat. Maybe Real heat could've given him a special move for the finale.
>>
>>79087594
Well yeah, he inherited Roland's grid because Roland was designed to be Heat's stand-in in combat. Started off with different stats, but as soon as you got some levels into him it was obvious that they shared stat growths.
As for the VA thing, that's a valid point and I'm not sure what happened there. He only has what, two lines in combat? Maybe they just...forgot.
>>
>>79087895
What about the battle with True Varna and False Varna?
>>
>>79087810
Heat is kind of a lunkhead, isn't he
>>
>>79087990

Well I mean as NPCs in the sun or something.
>>
>>79088094
That's what makes him endearing!
>>
>>79087929
Either way his addition as a party member is pretty pointless since he's essentially a Roland reskin with different weaknesses.
>>
>>79088236
He benefits more from the Hee-ho Ring, that's the main thing.
>>
>>79088236
Roland's avatar was always pretty cool.

It's kind of a shame you can't have both Heat and Roland.
>>
>>79088236
Or it could be argued that Roland is a Heat reskin, since Heat came first.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that he's totally pointless though, since what if Heat was one of your primary party members in DDS1? Wouldn't it be nice to get the old team back together for the final fight?

>>
>>79091071
Don't forget how complex the loyalty system is for modern gamers.
>>
>>79090550

it's literally reincarnation because it's literally a cycle of rebirth

But buddhism teaches the concept of anatman, lack of self. There is no "soul" of an individual, one whole and unchanging core of a being. Every being is a composite of parts, one of those parts being their karma which is what passes from life to life.
>>
>>79086074
That's what I did. If you don't savestate you only get a try every moon phase.
>>
>>79090730
It's funny how most people say DDS2's plot went full retard even though most of it had been hinted at since the very beginning of the first game.
Reincarnation? The constant rain in the Junkyard, literally one of the first things you see in the game. So subtle you don't even register it beyond "oh hey, it's raining".
>>
>>79091151
It's useless because there's no law and chaos alignment. And fusion is fucking awful, demons don't level up.
>>
>>79091172
there is no cycle

the only reason that Serph & Co. actually became real again is because of God and the EGG sending junk data to him

most people don't come back in DDS. only a very, very select few were able to
>>
>>79091268
I think beating up Brahman is still a little absurd

>>79091151
I feel sorry for somebody who's too dumb to understand SH loyalty. I mean the game has a whole vision quest centered around teaching you how it works.
>>
>>79089921
>I heard the translation is a bit dodgy though.
Not really. If that's the only thing you're hesitant about, just get it.
>>
>>79091268

yeah this is basically what's going on in the whole duology. In the junkyard the flow of samsara is represented by the rain and the actual river while in the outer world, which is still data, samsara is data flowing to and from the sun.
>>
>>79091194

Are there no hints? If not then that's just brutal.

What's an SMT game if it doesn't involve a climactic confrontation with some kind of deity? Plus, Divine Identity was an amazing theme.
>>
>>79091354

It's the definition of samsara. Your concept of the junkyard being "fake" and the real world being somehow intrinsically different are probably at the root of how you're looking at it wrong.

Did you get it through JB Hi Fi? Or did you order it online? Bought Bravely Default and Zelda through my mate who works at EB Games to boost his KPI's, worked out to be $40 and $50 dollars respectively. Ouch.

>>79091410
Oh really? I heard there was chunks of untranslated text and that it was a bit buggy, but if that's not true then I'll definitely get on it.
>>
>>79091472
I didn't find any.
>>
>>79091784
JB Hifi, yeah. The translation has a few slip-ups that are really glaring like the Japanese symbols for Life Stone appearing sometimes but nothing that broke the game for me.

>>79091071
>implying that matters to someone who said he was fine with SMT1/II

>>79091283
SH fusion is my favorite because demons inherit skills, but they also have consistent inheritance rules. So you can fuse to make better demons, but you don't jerk around trying to get a specific combination for hours on end, and you can't just use one demon to carry you to the end.
>>
>>79091283
Demons are tools to be used at your discretion, son of man. They are not your friends.
>>
>>79091408

Doesn't make it a good mechanic.
>>
>>79092071
>inherit skills
>SH
Sure thing bub
>>
>>79092224
You don't know the pain of trying to get a demon to inherit Makakaja because that shit got lower priority than fucking Agi.
>>
>>79092224
But they do inherit skills? If you fuse different demons into the same result, they keep the same basic skills but gain different ones from one of the ingredients.
>>
>>79092187
I'm indifferent towards it. I'm actually surprised at how okay I was with MAG, though.
>>
>>79091784
There are, like, two or three strings of text that are untranslated, but you might not even run into them. A few lines go out of the text box.
There are other bugs though. The most important one, you can avoid, just don't have two files with the same character name (even for NG+) or chests might bug and you'll be unable to progress. The other one is random freezing during attack animations which some people get maybe a couple times a playthrough (many don't get any at all, for whatever reason).
>>
>>79092332
I haven't played Soul Hackers yet but MAG sucked in SMT1 and 2. In 1 it didn't matter at all and in 2 you just had Aleph and Hiroko murder everything until you got to a boss fight
>>
I like the MAG system. SMT IV would have been much better balanced with it.
>>
>>79092449
I was swimming in MAG in SH.
>>
>>79092449
MAG is your money making scheme in SH.
>>
>>79092557
MAG hasn't been a problem in MT1 either
>>
>>79092624
>tfw you crash the MAG economy by the end of the game
>>
>>79092481
I think SMTIV's bizarre difficulty curve might have been at least partially intentional. The difficulty drops when you get to Tokyo because the game opens up a lot and starts to become more about exploration and figuring out where to go instead of navigating one relatively small dungeon, then it ramps up in difficulty towards the end a bit as you narrow in on your final goals. It definitely did need some tweaking though
>>
>>79092632

Guessing you haven't gotten to the Sea of Flames, have you?
>>
>>79092624
Some random drops from demons are pretty valuable too, the dungeon you have to beat for NG+ has a sword that sells for like, 100,000 yen or some shit.
>>
>>79091283
Fuck demons that level up, they're meant to be used and then discarded, they don't have "potential" to be anything greater than they are unless fused off into something else.
>>
>>79092885
Pokemon-style spinoff where you raise lifelong demon friends when
>>
>>79092885
I agree with this. Most players don't bother keeping demons past their skill cap anyways
>>
>>79092821
Yeah but it wasn't really that bad. I had to grind a couple of times to refill MAG but after I found the healer in Sea of Flames I had no problem.

And Infini hands out MAG like condoms at a Planned Parenthood Center.

IMO, Soul Hackers, Strange Journey, SMT II and if... (I speak moonrunes)

Majin Tensei is up there but its too different to really compare to Nocturne. If we're not being pedantic about spinoff vs SMT I thought DDS was just as good a Nocturne

freeze only happens if nemissa casts bufu on a specific demon (can't remember which, but it reflects ice) while wearing reflect ice clothes. it only freezes if the reflected damage is enough to kill nemissa AND the demon. many don't get it since not everyone gives nemissa ice skills

The only song I found myself not loving in SJ was the regular battle theme. The rest were fantastic, really helped reinforce the atmosphere of the game but I just felt that the normal battle theme was all over the place. Then again, in my case battles were over so quickly in SJ that I rarely heard more than the first 20-odd seconds.

Fun fact: In every game the demons talk about how they lost and were kicked out of heaven, and chaos endings are non canon. By their own logic they're eternal pussies, since law won the outer universe battle, and neutral seems to win most in universe battles. What has chaos ever won?
>>
>>79099821
You're mother.
>>
>>79099737
I know right

I tried to find it watching a play-through since I can't be bothered to replay the whole game again, but the guy talks too much
>>
>>79099821
>Chaos endings are non canon.
Except they are canon. There's a vast multiverse out there with alternate world's and timelines.

This was a specific point in IV when they visited the worlds where Law or Chaos won, no to mention the number of alternate ones based on Flynn's actions at the end of IV and how both Walter and Jonathan believe he helped them, meaning one of them came from an alternate world.
>>
>>79099821
>chaos endings are non canon
there's no such thing as canon in the SMT universe, since alternate timelines are such a huge part of the series. You could argue that neutral route is "canon" in SMT I because 20XX in SMT II follows from the neutral ending, but you'd be wrong because "Chaos" 20XX exists in the SMT universe, just Atlus never did a game on it
>>
So I'm late to this but is the new arena game really that much of a ripoff of Nyarly? Seriously why did they do this, why create a whole new character that will quickly be forgotten when they can use one of the original antagonists that pushed around two games? Are they somehow ashamed of their earlier games or what?
>>
>>79100227
I always wondered what happened to the Johnathan/Walter from the original world, since the one that appears after the reactor thinking you helped them wasn't pulled from the same timeline

>>79100426
The writing of Ultimax seemed to be pretty shit even by Persona 4 standards, I really doubt the writers had that much inspiration when writing it let alone enough to put in a huge throwback like that.

Not that I wanted him involved at all, I couldn't imagine how badly they'd ruin his character. Nyarly worked because his convoluted plan that took 2 games to pull off actually ended up coming to fruition in IS. I don't think you could really pull him off without that kind of huge-stakes scenario the 2-part system Persona 2 used. It'd be like trying to make SMT1 have a huge impact but removing the nukes being dropped.
>>
>>79100718
I'd rather do /smtg/ plays if... when it comes out, but that would get boring after a while
>>
>>79100889
if and smt II have a lot of really slow, tedious moments, in if, there's the maze/mines where you save the principal, you literally have to wait an hour for those idiots to dig through all that shit
>>
>>79099821

Worlds tend to end in chaos, since that's the terminology used to describe the conception at the beginning of nocturne. And then out of the chaotic vortex world comes a new Law as the basis for a new world.
>>
>>79100867
They could have pulled it off if they pulled an Enoch.

Basically manipulate everything to go exactly as planned and then troll the characters by acting like you lose to them thanks to the power of friendship, only to reveal afterwards you were trolling the shit out of them and your real plan is going unhindered, while leaving them completely oblivious that your real plan succeeded and some bad shit is going to go down in the future with them unaware.

Of course this would only truly work if he hadn't came in at the end of Arena to gloat about his evil scheme.

Well he is one of the SMT villains that actually managed to achieve what he set out to do with every other character trying to make the best with what they have, something you only get on SMT1 and maybe 2, I also agree that it would be kind of hard for him to come back since he is in a kind of lock with the "contract" the P2 protagonists made using their memories, he is also one of the few persona villains that can and would restart the universe given the chance, what pisses me off is that they did nearly a 1-1 copy of him with the new guy that gets killed right away
