Bards were the jack of all trades class in EQ, which made them by far the best "support" class but by far the hardest class to play. It also had the best CC in the game(until its mass mez got nerfed. They could solo entire zones). Even after the mass mez nerf, they were still EXTREMELY fun to solo with when you had to via swarm kiting.
Enchanters were the best CC class, being able to mezz multiple targets for long times and buff allies with a wide array of powerful buffs.
Shamans were one of the 3 healing classes(druid and cleric being the other two), but unlike the druid, it focused on debuffs, dots on top of healing. Their best debuff and the biggest reason you would bring shamans to raids, was their attack speed slow. Clerics were the main healers of the game and no one could heal anywhere near as well as clerics though.

Engineer is this game's Jack and it fits your description of hardest to play well. It also had the most CC in the game, but that's only really important for PVP.
Mesmer is the closest thing to an interrupt class, and Mallyx Revenant for debuffs, but there isn't any real comparable analogue for those roles IMO. Every class in this game can function independently.

Gearing up is fairly easy although there are a few time gates ) laurels and charged quartz) you'll need to work around. The raid is the only part of the game where people will be strict about class and gear.
If it means anything, Elementalist is about as hard and more wanted in raids.

Some more info on bards in EQ just for fun:
The reason bards were hard to play was the song mechanic btw. Playing multiple songs was called twisting. With optimal song twisting, you could get a maximum of 4 songs going without a song ever falling off.
Songs were buffs(damage buffs, move speed buffs, HoTs, defensive buffs, elemental resistance, etc etc), debuffs(attack speed slow, dots, damage reduction, damage taken increase, lower resistances, etc), CC, damage, and (light)healing. Each song only lasted a couple seconds, which is why it was hard to play. You couldn't be any more than half a second late otherwise you would have to figure out the new order asap and start twisting all over, which made things difficult for your raid when you fucked up. Even trash pulls took a while, so you also factor in boss fights... playing a bard was very demanding. You had to do this for hours.
Even just soloing, you would have to keep at least 3 songs twisting to be able to solo with any decency. After Kunark(even during, kind of) once you got a drum and selos though, swarm kiting made things easier needing to only really twist 3 songs with minimal stress.

When he says "work around" I think he means "actually do it." Laurels you get by logging in. Just make sure you log in each day to get your bonus and never spend the laurels until you need them. Charged quartz he mentions, but I'm not too sure what for since I don't think you really need celestial stat gear but whatever: you'll have to collect/buy quartz and charge it each day. You get 1 charged quartz per day, basically. It takes about 30 to make a set of cele gear.
So essentially you need to have a little daily routine, in addition to whatever else you really want to do in the game that day.

Laurels can't really be rushed beyond the 40 or so you get every 28 days for logging in. The rest is just bought with gold.

Leveling is not... it's just going to happen. Depending on how hard you play it probably won't take you very long. There's certainly no need to an entire guild devoted to it.
Also this game has scaling, so you're down-leveled to whatever the level of the zone you're in is: max level players can still be found in pretty much every zone so it's not like nothing but newbs running around.
