I don't have HoT so I don't know how the new guild system works, but guilds used to get influence based on how many members were repping and doing stuff together. I'm sure there are other reasons for the super hardcore guilds to be on your case about that kinda thing, but I don't really know what they might be.

If you ever want to try scrapper just rub with enough knights for 2.5k armour then run zerks everywhere else. Run scrapper runes for more tankiness and the explosions inventions and scrapper. Take gkit because obvious reasons then others are situational, I suggest keeping battering ram at all times in hot areas, just destroys breakbars. Mkit for bosses and supply drop for bosses that need large amounts of cc and groups of enemies.

Which are large dungeons for large groups.

First, I'm not sure wvw is dead and buried any more than, say, SAB was. It has the current misfortune of co-existing with a very large PvE update that includes grinding for stuff. People need to get their new armor sets, their masteries, their raids, etc, etc, and for the moment WvW is taking a lower priority on their leisure time.
