Encourage your enemy that you are more important than defending the objective. "OP" heroes and snipers are a good way to do this. If your entire team is skirmishers then you can't effectively defend because you're all too busy flanking and skirmishing.

Learn to switch songs really quickly and more importantly WHEN to switch. Some games I go back and forth between Speed and Heal several times in a few seconds, especially on KotH.
Wall-running is great and makes it harder for less-skilled enemies to track you. Better foes might be able to track you, but you can combine it with quick song swaps to throw off their tracking (because your speed changes your wall-slide speed TREMENDOUSLY).
Abuse the shit out of your alt fire to keep literally everyone off of you, your team, and your point.
Aspire to have an objective time that is equal to your game time. It's actually impossible, but still a good aspiration.
Save ult for when your team is pushing (on attack) or when you're about to be pushed against (on defense). Learn to spot the signs of an incoming push and use your ult BEFORE it starts for maximum effectiveness. Team coordination helps here, but you can do it in SoloQ if you're attentive.
Learn who your good teammates are and encourage/help them whenever possible, so long as it keeps you both on the point.
The objective is more important than anything else. If you are not on the point you are not doing your job properly.
Also, play 20+ hours of Jet Set Radio. It'll genuinely help, especially with the wall-riding.

Know when to leave. If your team isn't close, get the fuck out of there. You're literally the most mobile hero in the game. Only DVA rivals your speed, and she can't kill you if you're trying to escape.
Know when to contest. You're pretty good at contesting and extending overtime. If your team is on the way, hold your ground.
Amp up your speed boost at chokepoints.
Elevate yourself. Being up high keeps you out of crossfire.
Git gud at wall riding. When I say Lucio is most mobile hero in the game, I'm not kidding. This is how you elevate yourself, this is how you escape, this is how you stay safe.

Mercy is generally better for defense since you tend to die in a clump and have less utility for his speed boost, but you'll usually want 2 support anyway (or even 3 in this upcoming meta), and 2 Mercy has almost no added benefit compared to Mercy/Lucio, and nobody else compares to Lucio's AOE healing. There's nothing too wrong with defensive Lucio, it's just you'll probably miss some clutch plays you could get with Mercy instead.
