Yes, he was cheating. Even at 99 END with FAP2, you can't do more than 3 consecutive rolling attacks with any ultra.
He was taking very little damage because he had 99 in every stat, which gives him an enormous amount of flat damage reduction compared to an appropriately leveled character. He probably hacked his stats and turned on infinite stamina because he was literally so bad at videogames he needed those crutches to compete.
People hacking their stats to have 99 across the board but still be level 120 for matchmaking purposes are astoundingly common. People discovered that it doesn't give you invalid data and now everybody is doing it. Pontiff's, and every other sl120 dueling hotspot, is infested with them now, they make up the majority of players at that level range.
You can use CE yourself to check if a player you've summoned has legitimate stats or not. If they don't, just refuse to fight them and walk off the edge.

It's the final evolution of the meta
First people gravitated to dark infusion because it's objectively superior to pure physical in every single case
Then people started ringswapping to hardcounter dark-infusions
Then people started keeping a backup copy of each of their weapons as pure physical and every other elemental infusion, and swapping to counter ringsawaps
Ringswappers realized that swapping elemental rings took more effort than swapping weapons and gave up
And so everyone went back to using dark infusions all the time.
Basically the only time you don't use dark is when someobody is wearing obvious anti-dark armor, using an obvious buff, or when hitting them once indicates that they've ringswapped to counter dark, then you just quickly swap to a different variant of the same weapon and continue tryharding.
Every serious DaS2 arenafag used CE to build their characters so they always had all the weapons and infusions they needed.

Dark has the least amount of resist possible to get, unless you use very specific setups. I still remember that one time skor was streaming and he was using Navlaan's robes and that shit required 16/16 int faith to equip. Several high level players ragequit on him because just the chaos robes and 16/16 cut their damage in half.
I've lost all motivation to play the game for the sake of the game, so for the past few days I've been trying to set up a PS4 fight club to at least have something semi-social to do. Best Greatsword is the Hollowslayer Spear. Play passively and fish for 2HR2 counterhit pokes with leoring, basically using the weapon as a DaS2 lance. Only use R1s to shut down bad advances with HA trades.
Claymore can do the same thing, but its R1s are much worse so it's less good at being a passive little shit.
Best UGS is either Astora or Profaned. Profaned has highest in-class AR (yes, higher than FUGS. great game balance, from) and so does the most damage on normal hits and combos of all kinds. It's the only UGS that will consistently see 400 damage a hit with R1s, and also has the best moveset with R2 thrusts and rolling pokes. Astora is weaker overall, but has the gimmicky rolling attack that hits as hard as a fully charged R2 despite being much, much faster, and has no interruptible point in its animation. Astora is gimmicky and weaker against people who don't fall for your rolling attack shit, but nothing in the game can out-trade its rolling attack, which makes it great against bad players and against slow weapons that don't really have any safe option that doesn't end in them losing 2/3 of their HP to a rolling attack.
It is now acceptable to use the phrase "now that the dust has settled".

I've looked at the Poise calculation formula and it's kinda embarrassing how rigged the formula is, for what it is, given that it's disabled anyway.

Even Havel's armor doesn't give you more than 20 poise per set piece, but this formula is rigged in such a way as to make equipping many different set pieces at once that all pitch into the Poise pool entirely worthless.
So what you'd want to do, if you wanted to max out Poise the easy and cheap way, would be to equip Yhorm's Greatshield and nothing else that adds to poise. You'd end up at flat 45, more than enough to tank any weapon in the game, and then be free to equip yourself in such a way as to make fastrolling possible.
IF poise was turned on, which it isn't.

Casting buffs takes a long time. Spite kiting in das2 is done very simply by holding a good shield up and backpedaling. Don't backpedal too far and you won't have trouble interrupting it, unless opponent goes full retard with falling buffs.

The problem with armor is DaS3 is that it doesn't have poise, but it is still governed by weight. They should have gone full DaS1 OR full BB. Either give the armor poise so that putting points into Vit is worth it, or leave out poise, but make armor weightless so you can dress based on fashion alone.

Physical scaling in ds2 is ass and elemental adds a huge base damage bonus which is more than what you will gain from physical scaling.
For example chaos blade gains like 25 AR at 40 dex compared to 25 on phys builds. And robflynn works even when applied to elemental setup so you are right that robflynn dominates everything, just not on a builds relying on physical scaling.
And even when you fully minmax your armor to protect yourself against dark (which happens rarely as fuck) they will just hardswap to a physical version using the fact you hurt your physical defenses.
As i said, learn the meta before opening your mouth.

When I discovered that cestus can L2 on reaction to any attack from any ultra and score a guaranteed punish because they take too long to recover to escape, I lost what little faith I had left in this game.
It'd be one thing if you had to make a callout and activate Perseverance early, but you can literally stand in front of someone, wait until they attack, wait until their attack animation is half done, tap L2 and still have enough time to connect your L1 before they've recovered enough to roll away. It's a free and guaranteed 700 damage every time they swing their weapon and they can't do anything about it.
It's even funnier because all of the meta weapons like carthus and washingpole don't give a fuck about perseverance, but it hardcounters some of the outright worst weapons in the game.
