Basic info:
As you traverse the real world, as represented on the in-game map, you'll occasionally run into tufts of rustling grass. Approaching these will end with a Pokémon appearing on the map, and clicking on it will initiate a battle.
Battles aren't between two Pokémon, though. They're between a Pokémon and your ability to swipe a Poké Ball in their direction. When you engage a Poké Ball, a colored ring will appear around the opponent. These change in size after each capture attempt. Throwing a Ball during a smaller window seems to be more effective, based on our time with the game, but that's a part we're still trying to figure out.
Going near water will attract water Pokémon. Playing at night brings out more nocturnal creatures, like Clefairy and Gastly.
Hatching Eggs: Each Egg displays the number of kilometers you must walk for the Egg to hatch. In general, the more kilometers required, the rarer the Pokémon that will hatch. A notification will appear when the Egg has hatched.
Make sure you have the Pokémon GO app open while you walk. Kilometers walked when the Pokémon GO app is closed won’t count toward hatching your Eggs.
Gyms: Fight at your team's gym to train and increase it's reputation. Fight at other team's to decrease their reputation. Tap your opponent to hit them, swipe left or right to dodge attacks, once one or more blue bars are filled, tap and hold to power up your secondary attack, release when the smaller blue bar fills up. Take over other teams' gyms and put your mons in to defend them.

Best ways to get xp?
Best way I have found is to farm a shit ton of pidgey/weedle/caterpie and evolve them. They cost 12 candies each to evolve. Also can work with rattatta but they cost 25 each.
Each evolution gets you 500xp, 1000xp with a lucky egg.

At high CP you want to power up first. The increase from evolution is exponential and the increase from powering up is a %, but the tests were done at low levels
With two cp10 rattattas, the power up bonus and evolve bonus are close to the same, so it looks like evolving first gives a bigger bonus because the power up after has a larger CP to take the % of
But at 250+ CP levels, evolve can add hundreds of bonus, and every bit adds onto that bonus exponentially.
I evolved a 259 Pigeotto and got a 431 Pidgeot, then powering up gave another 30 for 461

If I go to the harbour in the city I see a lot more shelders, magicarp, tentacool, psyduck etc. If I am on the main street in the city I see 9 billion zubats. It's not a matter of "what CP is worth it". A lot of it is circumstantial to your surroundings. If everybody around you is around 500 CP anyways, and they're just putting whatever up, then you can technically stop grinding whenever.
Figure out what your community is pushing towards, and follow along. Don't stop until it seems to plateau, and you can choose to stop when they stop and still feel "you're keeping with the curve".
If you have some pokemon you like and it has a good moveset anyways, then power it up, evo it and so forth. Low CP can take high CP under the right circumstances. Right now a large part of the CP effect is psychological, people see 1500 CP and they go "I can't take that" so they won't even try.
It's like in Ingress where newbies see the entire zone controlled, and they immediately go "can't do this, quit game".

It depends, if he lives in a place where nobody else really "plays competitively" anyways, then it doesn't matter. Same for you, that maxed out Pidgeot might trash mobs forever since nobody else will train.
But if his Raticate is say 300 CP with the same moveset as a Raticate at 900 CP, well you'd think that the 900 CP Raticate would win due to difference in HP. The only difference right now is attack spamming, and attacker's advantage.
If his raticate is fighting other stuff, then STAB and movesets will play a large role as well.

You can have one pokemon per gym. I don't think there's a limit to how many gyms you can have pokemon in but you will only get the defender bonus for 10. It's better to have more than 10 gyms secured because they will flip.
I don't know if there is a max limit but I have seen gyms with level 8. I think I saw a 12 but that might be my imagination.

Yes people have tried. If you don't have 10 gyms nearby you're short on luck. The slots are for other people so you don't get one guy hogging every slot to waste for his daily defender bonus.
