The other guy here, I ended up having the same "trying to reboot" situation. I restarted and everything came up fine, but then I tried loading ninjhax again and it failed, crashed to home menu then home menu crashed and demanded restart. Nintendo still use shitty TN panels that wash out with the slightest tilt to the side on the N3DS/XL. You could get any of the 4 combinations of TN/IPS, with dual IPS being the rarest by a lot. Sadly, you can only access eShop on a region-swapped system if you are on an O3DS. N3DS can't go on eShop if you change regions.
Like I said, I ended up doing a motherboard swap. I took a US unit and put its motherboard into my JP unit. That way I got the everywhere-but-US system color I wanted (because I'm petty like that) but still was able to send my data from my old US unit to it.

I don;t really disagree with you there, not my best purchase decision, but I have it now so I want to get some use out of it. I had a fully upgraded NA o3ds and my J n3ds was on 9.9 so decided to start the hack process. Translating Jap text would just make it a lot more convenient for me, but isnt totally necessary. What I was wondering is would it be better to have english over eshop or eshop over english? Its completely possible I could start learning japanese text as well to get a hang of things anyway, and I do have my NA 3ds for reference on menu items (used it today while moving through steps). So again, english is mainly just a convenience thing.
I can already play my NA games on my excellent condition n3ds xl, my next goal is to be able to play some free games (I'd like to try out SMT IV final before its NA release date, for example).

The units are all region-free when hacked as far as I understand, so no reason you can't still enjoy those JP games. I installed CAKESFW back on the n3ds when the exploit just came out (It was the only n3ds option back then, stop laughing). I modified some files in order to update the thing through official Nintendo servers to 10.3 or 10.4 while still keeping my CFW.
I hear Cakes is shit and outdated by now, but is it safe to update this thing through nintendo servers to 11.0 or do I need a newer version of cakes or another CFW? Just want to play monster hunter GEN.

You needed a special key because of another encryption layer on the n3DS from version 9.6 forth.
They didn't do that again.
Also, check the wiki on Cakes's repository on github as there are some neat cake patches available like the 3ds_injector.cake from Wolfvak (enables region emulation and region-free home menu)

You should still check Wolfvak's 3ds_injector.cake as yours _could_ be from mid-kid, which is just more-or-less a PoC 3ds_injector.cake. It only does region-free home menu. Nothing else.
It's better to overwrite the one you currently have with the one from Wolfvak, just to be safe.
Also, you should update to the latest nightly so you can use 11.0 NATIVE_FIRM (the firmware.bin) with it. Which is something you absolutely need when Nintendo updates again.
