That's because, after the events of Sonic 2, the Death Egg plummeted into the island, causing it to crash into the ocean. Then it lifted off at the end of Sonic 3 before Sonic caused it to crash back down for Sonic & Knuckles. Then it lifted back off for the final time at the end of Lava Reef/beginning of Sky Sanctuary, letting the island finally float back up into the sky after the Master Emerald was restored.

Which leaves the whole Hidden Palace to Doomsday Zone being one huge dash before the island falls into the ocean.
I think it's a case of no-one's supposed to be on the island because most powerful thing in the world is on it. And it made sense back in Tikal's time to shove the rock on an island in the air, no-one's gonna reach that.
Now we have planes and shit. But that's why Knuckles has huge fucking fists.

Angel Island was already on the ocean. It can float on it without the Master Emerald, the latter is just needed to bring it back into the sky and, in the case of Knuckles' route, keep the island from falling back into the ocean again.

Sonic will always be there for Sally and vice versa. Amy having the crush on Sonic is a lot of her character but Ian and Kitchling and every other post penders writer knew to make her more than that.
And Sonic is just too carefree to want a relationship.

It's a good comic that's very classic game centric keeping in line with their retro personalities, and it does a fine job of it.
But different strokes for different folks, and some like the Sonic expanded Universe stuff. Some people loved the Sonic X stuff etc.

I wouldn't say it applies so much to Mega Drive, but restraint is something all artists need to pay heed of. If every other face is an exaggerated reaction it just diminishes the value of them.
Frankly I'd say it's fine on it's own, it's just the culture of storytiming an issue with people going 'CROP THIS NOW' slightly mars the experience.

I don't think every face in Mega Drive was that exaggerated. The environment of the reading is probably to blame here, as you said. I'd compare it to when an off panel did the classic "character eats a ton and gets comically fat" gag, and anons were freaking out about inflation fetishism.

Exactly, I think there's also the effect of the knee-jerk reaction. In time the emotions will calm down and people will take a more objective look at it. To be honest I think Mega Drive really shines in it's art and character interactions as well as, let's be honest here, it's nostalgia. I wouldn't really say that it's a very funny comic though. It would also be interesting to see what people who didn't play the classic games or even have that much interest in Sonic would think of it. That applies to the comics in general as well.
