The account system for TGM3 keeps track of your current rank as well as your highest achieved rank, to know when you should get promotional (or demotional) exams. The higher your rating when you get demoted, the longer it takes for the game to enable the random chance promotional exam roll. At MM (the highest rank below GM) you have to play 5 of the past 7 games at GM rank in order to QUALIFY for the random roll for the GM promotional exam, and if you get demoted back to MM the game disables that random roll, so you can never get another promotional exam.
