After having played multiple versions, I can say that PS versions are the best, with smooth scrolling and player-friendly UI. The deal with the music is kinda the same as DDS2/KMT2 - the original sounds better, but remixed tracks are also fine. Vanilla version of PS SMT2 was full of bugs, so be sure to get the revised version with golden PRESS ANY BUTTON text at the title screen (the revised version was uploaded here not that long ago). PS version of SMTIf has LOTS of new content and small fixes, including new awesome music in Akira's route.

GBA versions are okay (great UI, new content), but the music quality and scrolling sucks.

iOS versions of SMT1&2 were ported from GBA (featuring Visionary Items), but use PS music, with added extended versions of tracks from SMTIf. iOS version of SMTIf is a port of PS version (with smooth scrolling).

PCE CD version of SMT1 is okay, but the scrolling feels choppy. It also doesn't have that much unique content - only 4 new demons and while some animated cutscenes look great, the others are epilepsy-inducing. The music sounds different, because it's in FM, but it's pretty cool.

Mega CD version of SMT1 is slow as shit (even with Quick Scrolling), but it has lots of unique content, ilncluding: 1. new kickass intro cutscene, 2. new demon spritework based on Kaneko's official artwork (Douman, Yakshini, etc), 3. new demons. The encounter rate is RIDICULOUS, even compared to the original SFC version. The final dungeon has different floors compared to the other versions. The remixed music is hit or miss; most of the tracks made in FM sound great though. There is also an alternate theme playing in the Mansion of Heresy.

There also was SMTif: Hazama's Chapter for mobile phones, which had lots of new content, similar to GBA versions, but good luck with finding it.

tl;dr:

>SMT1
PS -> iOS -> GBA -> SFC -> MCD -> PCE

>SMT2
Bug fix PS -> iOS -> GBA -> SFC -> vanilla PS

>SMTIf
PS/iOS -> Hazama's Chapter (Mobile) -> SFC

Where the Tips and Tricks says to Focus on STR and VIT with some SPD for Hero, Is 1 SPD for every 2 VIT and 2 STR enough Speed investment? I'm almost to Thor's Hammer and it seems pretty good so far. I'm evenly Spreading Heroine's stats between MAG/VIT/SPD though.
>>
>>147635186
Just go VIT/SPD and forget about STR until mid-late game. STR kind of sucks in SMT I, most of your damage comes from the weapon itself and you're gonna be using guns a lot more anyway.

I would say it's probably better to focus on raising MAG and INT faster than spreading it evenly for heroine because those stats determine how fast she learns new magic, and her later game spells are really useful. You still want enough SPD for her to stunlock people with Zio and enough VIT for her to not fucking die.

For Hero I just go full Stronk/Speed in every Megami Tensei game and it works. I don't really like VIT as much for him because I find STR already raises your health and Speed raises defense, albeit at a slower rate. INT and LCK aren't useless for him either, they do raise his physical stats a bit and have cool side effects (INT is supposed to help in negotiation, but I don't know how it works; LCK helps with getting items to drop) but it's best to raise them with Incenses.

Oh, and keep in mind that you will have nice stat bonuses from the armor sets you will be wearing, and there are a lot of incenses in this game, so it's kind of a waste to put 40 points a stat.

>Game starts with amnesiac protagonist in generic village
>Village gets destroyed
>Meets love interest he remembers somehow
>Meets exile prince and his Friendly Ethical Pirate group

There was just nothing compelling there. If there's anything interesting about the story it waits a long time to reveal it, and the writing at the beginning was too hamfisted for me so I didn't really care.

And again, the game was almost painful to play.
>>
>>147627060
Try The Legend of Dragoon instead. The story is pretty different from generic JRPGs. The battle system is fun/frustrating depending on if you're shit or not (you have to time the X button to your attacks to continue a combo). Inventory management is important. You can only use magic while in dragoon form, so healing items and elemental damage items are actually useful. Great game, wish it got a remake.
>>
>>147646361
>>Village gets destroyed
You forgot to mention that it gets destroyed by the protagonist with him killing his best friends.

>>Meets exile prince and his Friendly Ethical Pirate group
Did you talk with the old man in the cave? That's where the world building starts/gets interesting.

>If there's anything interesting about the story it waits a long time to reveal it
The intro was enough to get me interested. Finding out what happened was pretty great but I admit it takes a while although, if you were paying close attention, you should have already found out that Elly is somehow related to the captain

>And again, the game was almost painful to play.
And again why? Because of the fighting system? It's better than the usual stuff like SJ's.

I mean I can understand if the game just rubs you the wrong way or something but it really isn't generic. And the music is fucking great.

I actually felt the exact same way about it. I started playing because I had an Evangelion itch (it actually isn't like Eva at all, by the way; it's more like G Gundam if anything), but not only it starts really generic, it also has some seriously boring dialogue to read through (might be the translation's fault) and the combat is nothing special. I think I put about 10 hours in before finally giving up.

The mechs are really awesome, though. They should have made the whole thing about them instead of having so many parts where you are fighting on foot.

I kinda wanna go back and finish it so I can see more mecha and the Judeo-Christian influence it's supposed to have (why didn't they introduce these interesting things earlier in the game? unless they did and I forgot entirely about it), but I also heard the second disk is really rushed, so I don't know if I should do it.

Are Xenosaga / Xenoblade any good? Do you actually use the robots often on them?
>>
>>147647090
>Did you talk with the old man in the cave?
The guy who tells you about the Super Important Robot and then Fei and Bart wonder if Fei's Gear could be the Super Important Robot and they dismiss it and then suddenly the old man starts saying crazy things about Fei's Gear and denies it is the Super Important Robot and refuses to tell them anything else? That's what I meant by hamfisted.

>The intro was enough to get me interested.
Same here. Then it dumped me into a generic village.

>And again why? Because of the fighting system? It's better than the usual stuff like SJ's.
You did not seriously just claim that spamming deathblows is better than Strange Journey's gameplay?

>And the music is fucking great.

>The guy who tells [...] That's what I meant by hamfisted.
Yeah, that's pretty cliched. But you're confusing things the super important robots they were wondering about are more than one (those have a pretty interesting role in the story). Fei's Gear is just the super super important one.

>Same here. Then it dumped me into a generic village.
Which you leave after, what, five minutes? There's no point in talking with everyone, if you didn't like it.

>You did not seriously[...]?
If you replace gameplay with fighting system, yes, but what I meant is less generic. Strange Journey's figthing system is completely standard and it's only better because of the decent difficulty which Xenogears lacks.

>Most of it[...]
I love almost every track.

>>147647574
>(might be the translation's fault)
I don't know, I have played it in moon. If you mean the slice of life stuff of villagers, then that's not the translator's fault. I really like stuff like that because you learn more about the world not just the big shit but also about completely normal inhabitants trying to make a living.

>why didn't they introduce these interesting things earlier in the game?
Well the intro has already introduced the influence through that God stuff appearing on the screens. With 10 hours you should also have made it to the cave already in which killing God is talked about and I completely forgot that Dajil comes before that, with the church organizing everything mech (don't remember if that gets mentioned before)
I agree that the game takes a little while until shit really hits the fan but that only amplifies the impact in my opinion.

>Are Xenosaga / Xenoblade any good? Do you actually use the robots often on them?
I preferred gears over saga but you might like saga more. Mechs are less important though.
Xenoblade on Wii has no mechs at all. Haven't played it yet. In Xenoblade X on Wii U they seem to be a lot more important but I haven't played that one either.

>MISSION COMPLETE

Guys, I just beat Strange Journey with terrible armor and weapons and it feels fucking good man. This brings my grand total to MT [KMT], MTII [KMT], SH, SJ, and IV. I've only been playing for a year or so but I love Megaten more than any series I've ever played. Thanks for being the best general a fiend could ask for throughout my journey.
>>
>>147678924
Congrats, anon.

>>
>>147679198
Thanks, famicom. I bought IV on a whim, and I've torn through more games in this past year than I have in the past 3. There's just something about Megaten... Maybe I can get around to playing SMT on my phone now... After I beat #FE
>>
>>147679478
Looking at your list, you might need to get your hands on a ps2, otherwise you're missing out on some of the best megaten games.

I actually got a backwards compatible PS3 specifically for playing Megaten. I got like 23 hours into Nocturne, but I really didn't like it as much as the others I'd played. I think I'm going to tackle at least the first Raidou between #FE and Final. Might give the DDS games a shot at some point too. I'm patiently laying in wait for the MTII Famicom translation. There's just so many fucking games, it's amazing.

The ride never ends with megaten. There will probably always be games you haven't played.

Buckle up, because the combat gets...wonky at times. Raidou 2 fixes that though. You now have the ability to roll around the battle map instead of "running" like a Naruto character.

I've heard that, but since they're both so easily available I figure I might as well start with the first one.

My favorite part of the Key of Solomon is the varying amounts of summoning required. There's probably four levels of summoning that are progressively more spiteful of the demon when they don't show up.

I started reading more Crowley a few weeks ago. The book on Enochian Sex Magick, to be precise. Keep in mind they seriously fluffed up the sex parts, as I didn't see anything about it mentioned in the first half of the book. Shame that Enochian is probably just some 16th-century antediluvian invention and not an actual reflection of human psychology.

Crowley is a pain in the ass to read. I picked up Paradise Lost to read since it's at least comparably straightforward. What /lit/ have you guys been reading lately?

Paradise Lost is pretty great, Satan's really interesting in the first book as well as Adam and Eve's actions after the fall. I haven't been reading anything smt related lately because being an English major leaves little time to read for fun outside of class. I did reread the Oresteia a little while ago, still want more Ancient Greek drama characters in SMT, even if they're not technically gods.

I assume you are doing the True Demon route, right? if that is the case, I would reccomend dropping Dante for the last boss because he doesn't have much utility and won't be able to do damage, either, as he doesn't have Pierce. Use him for normal encounters and any other boss fights you still have.

Some demons around your level range I can reccomend are Mother Harlot (try to give her Debilitate and buffs), the Mega Pixie if you can pass on some good abilities for her with mitamas (like buffs and some way to regain mana), Beelzebub if you don't mind grinding a bit (he's level 84), Kali (if you wanna do some work to give her Focus and Pierce, she's gonna rival Demi-fiend in terms of damage), Lilith could be quite good with some better moves too. Make sure you have at least two demons that can heal, and that you are able to both debuff fully (Debilitate) and buff fully extremely quickly, as you will have to deal with Dekunda and Dekaja. Demi-Fiend can do the damaging by himself, if you build him right.

Of course, if you are willing to work a bit for it, any demon could be good, so you can just use whatever you like. I used a Titania through the entire later part of the game because she is a qt. The Fiends are all potentially good because of their resistances, but you will have to customise their movesets.

As someone who actually knows Japanese, you subfags are insane. Yeah, Japanese VA is generally better for games made in Japan, the dubs aren't really that bad. You only think the Japanese VA is so good because you don't understand it. Now I'm not saying that you can't tell at all if you don't understand it, someone putting actual emotion into their voice, someone who's actually acting, are easy to identify no matter the language, but there's a lot of little things you don't notice because you haven't heard Japanese every single day of your life. Even for me, I can't say I'm an expert of Japanese VA quality, because I don't live in Japan, I'm still not and never will be as intimate with it as I am with English.

Also, I'm not saying that people who simply prefer to hear things in their original language are insane, that's perfectly fine. It's just the people who act like Japanese VA can do no wrong and English VA can do no right that I'm talking about.

I've tried making this argument before but it's no use anon, there's just no reasoning with people who think it doesn't matter if you can't even begin to grasp the subtleties and nuances of a completely different language so long you can "hear the emotion".

I am a little miffed that they don't seem to have gotten Navarre and Nozomi's VA's back though, it's always a shame when that happens.

This is pretty funny.

>but there's a lot of little things you don't notice because you haven't heard Japanese every single day of your life
Like? And how could anything besides the acting be relevant for the quality of the VA's?

>It's just the people who act like Japanese VA can do no wrong and English VA can do no right that I'm talking about.
I didn't say that. Your strawman really is an unlikeable retard, doesn't know moon and is spouting shit like that. He should kill himself.
You say it yourself:

>Japanese VA is generally better for games made in Japan
And this is really not rocket science. VA is looked down upon on in the US, so the people working there are either not talented or just don't give a fuck or both.
I wish this sentiment towards VA would change because it is a job that deserves respect and pretty much everything gets dubbed but what can you do when VA's are regarded as failures who can't act "for real"?

In that case, you're an elitist who never left the weeaboo stage.

>Like?
If you don't understand this, you can't know Japanese as well as you think you do. There are subtle nuances in language that you'd have to experience many times over the course of your life to truly understand. You can be good, but unless you live in that region for a very long time, claiming you understand another language as well as you do your mother tongue is pure ignorance.

>And how could anything besides the acting be relevant for the quality of the VA's?
It's part of the acting. You know some Japanese people who know English think that shitty English VA is better than their own? That's because they haven't actually seen and heard and used English themselves day after day, year after year, and they don't truly understand it.

>VA is looked down upon on in the US
Not really. Animeish stuff maybe, but you don't see anyone getting laughed out of any place for providing a voice for a Mass Effect character. Fucking no one ever complains about or makes fun of the VAs for Legacy of Kain.

But I'll take the advice of>>147746380 and stop. Clearly, you think you've already decided that you know Japanese as well as a native, and that English sucks for VA. No reasoning with you there.

I'm not trying to say dubs are as good as or better than the original VA, as they tend not to be outside of some exceptions. Although I do think dubs in general get more hate than they deserve, I particularly hate seeing people shit on decent dubs just because they have a bias against them.

>If you don't understand this, you can't know Japanese as well as you think you do. There are subtle nuances in language that you'd have to experience many times over the course of your life to truly understand.
You're acting as if you'd have to be a native speaker to make statements about the quality of acting. That's completely absurd.
Also good job with giving examples for your mysterious nuances.

>You know some Japanese people who know English think that shitty English VA is better than their own?
Those are called westaboos here.

>That's because they haven't actually seen and heard and used English themselves day after day, year after year, and they don't truly understand it.
Not really, they're just biased. A fuck ton people on earth know English without being a native speaker and I can assure you that they're able to tell when acting is shit.

>Not really. Animeish stuff maybe, but you don't see anyone getting laughed out of any place for providing a voice for a Mass Effect character. .
It's still regarded as not really acting. Just compare the VA industry of the US and Japan. The difference in quality lies there, they need to put a lot more effort in Japan because they actually have competition, a lot of people want to become VAs similar to how a lot of people all over the world want to make it in Hollywood.

>You're acting as if you'd have to be a native speaker to make statements about the quality of acting. That's completely absurd.

Try learning to comprehend written English. You can't be as accurate a judge as a native speaker, but I never said you can't judge quality of acting at all. In fact, I said that you can judge somewhat even if you don't understand the language at all.

And as for nuances, there's no examples to give really. There are just cues aural cues people are used to. You're used to hearing things a certain way. Take Christopher Walken for example, the way he says anything at all is really weird compared to any other English speaker. Imagine that, but on a smaller scale.

>Not really, they're just biased.
>No man, people are experts at a language if they know enough to be able to read/listen to it
Okay.

Most people I know who know Japanese may have been weeaboos at one point who thought that everything about the Japanese language and Japanese VAs and all that was superior, but most of them grew out of that the more they learned about the language, and learned how much they didn't know. Even the guy I know who has an N1 certification admits that he's not a master of the moonrunes. But hey, you're Anon, the Super Linguist. Guess we just can't really compare to you.

>Jesus. How about trying at least?

How do you not understand this basic concept? Japanese and English are radically different languages, you can't apply your knowledge of speaking one to the other. From how they sound to how they're structured they are completely different.

If a performance sounds stilted or awkward, halfhearted or unnatural, over-acted or any other possible combination of issues that can come when delivering a performance, how are you going to tell when you don't have any working knowledge of the language? You're not, plain and simple. Outside of extreme scenarios, like when a character is expressing an incredibly powerful emotion.
>>

>Clearly, you think you've already decided that you know Japanese as well as a native, and that English sucks for VA. No reasoning with you there.
My whole point is that you don't need to be a Super Linguist or native speaker to judge acting.
The language is, of course, a part of the acting but it's really small compared to the other abilities important to acting. Acting schools don't just teach you how to speak the language.

>You're used to hearing things a certain way. Take Christopher Walken for example, the way he says anything at all is really weird compared to any other English speaker. Imagine that, but on a smaller scale.
You don't have to live in Japan to get used to hearing things a certain way. And how weird Walken talks isn't that important for assessing his acting, sure it's a trademark but he can still act.

>>147750221
>How do you not understand this basic concept? Japanese and English are radically different languages, you can't apply your knowledge of speaking one to the other. From how they sound to how they're structured they are completely different.
No shit but that's not really relevant when you're only looking at the quality of somebody's acting unless, of course, the language and culture of that specific country have different standards for good acting. You could still judge from your background though.

>If a performance sounds stilted or awkward, halfhearted or unnatural, over-acted or any other possible combination of issues that can come when delivering a performance, how are you going to tell when you don't have any working knowledge of the language?
You can tell most of that without knowing shit about the language except when it's about grammatical awkward stuff or wrong intonation like in Chinese

B-but you can't... because knowledge of the language directly contributes to your understanding of if a performance sounds natural and well delivered and...

Y'know what? I'm gonna go fap, none of this matters anyway.

Enjoy the rest of your day anon.

I love you /smtg/

>Then explain it to me.

I've tried, but you just can't comprehend the fact that you do not know how natural sounding speech is when not filled with powerful emotion. That watching anime or playing games is not an accurate judge of "How people sound when they're standing around, talking about homework." Even in English media, people don't always sound completely natural when having conversations. But if you can't understand this, there's no point in trying to convince you that you don't know exactly how people in another country, speaking in another language, really sound compared to their cartoons and games.
>>

>B-but you can't... because knowledge of the language directly contributes to your understanding of if a performance sounds natural and well delivered and...
Only the small part where the language is actually relevant like, again, grammar/intonation. Fact is that emotions are universal and you don't need to know a language to know when a person sounds excited, sad, angry, not caring etc. And this stuff is the most important shit for acting because it's difficult for normal people to express those emotions convincingly without actually feeling them.

>>147751450

So every acting in cartoons and games is disqualified from the start because nobody they don't speak like people would in real life? Do you know how acting works?

Quick question /smtg/, I'm about to replay Nocturne and I wanted to attempt Hard mode. Will I get fucked if I don't go with a new game plus and have the extra turn?
It's been 3 years since I last played Nocturne so I'll probably get rekt anyway.

If you're dissatisfied with my response to
>Even in English media, people don't always sound completely natural when having conversations.
then here:
Why is that? If it's because of unnatural sounding language, it's the fault of the ones responsible for the script. If it's because of unnatural acting, even people who don't know the language are able to realize it most of the time.

Honestly, it's one reason I've thought about playing the English version. But I don't want to have to deal with changing VAs in Apocalypse, so I don't know.

Did Nozomi repraised in Japan?

Because otherwise the main samurai cast and people like Hope, Hugo, Skins and that other hipster dude made a pretty good voice acting in english.

>Did Nozomi repraised in Japan?

Not sure, haven't played either of them yet. The MegaTen wiki only has one Japanese VA listed, so maybe. The Japanese are usually pretty good about reprising their roles.

Yeah, the English VA for the main characters and some of the other characters I've heard sound pretty good. Actually like Medusa's voice a bit more in the English version. Both of Alraune's voices are great.

I was always happy with the cast in SMT4, they're all good and quite varied. Plus Navarre is a fuckin treat. Occasionally some of the really random one off quest NPCs don't sound good but that's about it.

As for Apocalypse, I'm super happy with Dagda being Robert Atkin Downes doing some Irish accent. But damn it would have been cool to have a whole game with Char as your handler.

I played hard mode my first time through and thought it was pretty easy. The only parts that gave me trouble were the first few encounters (those are just luck), Matador and the first fight with Dante (hey kid, let me just 1-shot your buffers before you even get a turn, lol). After the that, I found that the difficulty balances out and the late game actually becomes a cakewalk because you're just so strong and have so many options. Even Lucifer was pretty pathetic.

You get that in Japanese too. It doesn't really matter as long as the characters you're going to be hearing for throughout the game sounds good, two lines by a bad actor won't ruin a game.

My introduction to Crowley was via Robert Anton Wilson and his various books on the subject. Israel Regardie is a little bit easier to read and that's nice given he was Crowley's right hand man, but fuck me the shit is just so obtuse at times. The Book of Lies is annotated with explanations poem by poem though so that might be worth a shot.
