If you're at a point where you can't complete everybody's trials, sure, it makes sense you'd only play characters you can use. But SFV's trials aren't that hard to do; if you're having trouble with them, there might be bigger problems with your fundamentals than you think.

ibuki seems so funky.
just outside of sweep/footsie range i can f+hk spam like momochi or go for IA kunai, and counter/catch stuff with mk, but all her more realistic hit confirms need to be pretty point blank, and she's not as easy as say karin whose all walking in with stuttered lk and fishing for c.mp hit confirm / ticthrow. ibuki has a decent standing low lk of her own, but it still doesn't seem as easy to get close enough to get mp hitconfirms going. command dash crossup has to be pretty preemptive, you need to go through them during their start-up frames really. its kinda similar with IA kunai, ideally you CH them trying to poke and hit confirm from it, so in both cases you have to make them a bit scared of your ground game from that longer range first. hence all the f+hk.
i just feel like i either get a full easy punish, or something weak like lk qcb+p because its all that would reach. i'm totally lacking the feeling that i open something with frame traps, because i'm never close enough to hitconfirm mp properly, or make them scared enough that i can walk up to good mp range in the first place.

The problem isn't so much what buttons are used but how they are used and how the other aspects of the game affect that use.
Older SF games used few buttons as well, but characters had things like good walkspeeds, good specials and interesting meter mechanics to change up the neutral.
In SFV the walkspeeds are shit and most normals have shit range so you can't do much of the movement, poking and whiff punishing game that is the backbone of every SF title.
Specials are largely garbage and punishable so you that's another set of option removed from the neutral game.
And lastly, V-Trigger is more of a combo-extending mechanic than anything else. It isn't used to change up the neutral meta like custom combos, parries and focus attack did in past games.
SFV's neutral has been massively dumbed down. This is why the game is so insanely boring. Most matches Coke down to mashing on the same few safe moves until you catch your opponent pressing a button and that's it.

If you're talking about the corner pressure the Rog player could've either use his V-Reversal or even mash an EX Screw Smash when the Ryu was going to dash in, which grants him armor and leaves the opponent far away from other pressure.
So yeah, it's mostly the Rog's fault why that first round ended up like that. Which is forgiveable, Balrog only came out recently.

what's the problem? the crossup jump kick input is just hold forward and then press lk since you cross up the input, which is normally back on the same side. so just jump forward and hold forward and do the combo. it has lots of hitstun.
also the dp xx ex fireball is kinda weird. you have to end dp in down-forward, go back to down then do fireball. i've heard people say you can do dp motion, press the button, then hit forward and the other button (in this case 2 buttons) quickly after for the drive cancel, but i've never gotten that to work. but try it and see if it does.
