The story is grounded in a way that fantasy elements are the everyday and shown accordingly. Like nature preserves for certain monsters or road signs telling you about a Malboro swamp. So you could have choco meteor and still have the game be grounded. Plus we do get to feed them to make them more powerful.
But speaking of Malboros, we get to see mini ones in the E3 trailer. I imagine fighting one will be brutal, but I hope we can run into nests if we aren't careful.

SNES if you want the best audio quality.
GBA if you're ok with worse audio and less screen space for a better translation and bonus content. There's a sound restoration patch which makes the audio better, but SNES is still the best in that regard.

Sakaguchi had been promoted at SE so he had little involvement in actual game development at this point, but FFIX was meant as a tribute to the older FF games, so he was put on the development team and it ended up being the last game he had a major role in creating.
