For the most part yes, but it heavily depends on the servers you roll on. Mushin/Jiwan are currently the most populous BNSG servers in NA, and if you're EU you have no choice but Windrest AFAIK. Rolling a character on a dead server could be beneficial for farming, however.
For newbies, Force Masters honestly offer the most profitable endgame, but any class but summoner should be engaging enough for a new player to stick with and learn the game.

Game is still real active still, I think. I'm on the most active server though (Mushin).
I find the game real fun! It's fun doing dungeons with friends, collecting outfits and getting money to me. The grind might not be for everyone though. Endgame can be pretty stressful for some people.
And I'd say pick whichever class looks fun to you. Soul Fighter just came out, might want to give them a try.

the only difference being that in games like BnS a player with 500 attack who knows his class and the enemies mechanics/patterns well enough can outdps someone who's shit at it even if they're at 550-600ap

Design wise or mechanics wise?
Design: Ken and Gen, Profane Jiangshi, Ogong, Hae Mujin. Giant sumo babies. Obese hopping ghost with a mouth on its stomach that attacks you with belly flops. The fucking monkey king. A pirate that fights you with grapples, stage effects, and his own stunt double in a glorified wrestling ring. I love it when BnS gets silly.
Mechanics: Torn between a whole lot of bosses that keep you on your toes by forcing you to pay attention to random AOE's, adds, etc, and also reward you with damage buffs that let you see big fucking numbers you don't get to see with other bosses. Venomous Thrasher pre-Silverfrost, Asura, Be Ido in the Nexus, Ken and Gen(again), the list goes on.
