I also take long breaks between dedicated scoring practice (been playing Deathsmiles on and off for the past 4 and a half years, which is the only game I've tried scoring seriously in), and it usually comes back to me pretty quickly when I decide to start again after a break.

Trying to please everyone never works out. It seems to be especially true for the shmup community because everyone has a different definition of "gitting gud", and trying to meet everyone's expectations is just silly.
Do what you wanna do, play the games that you enjoy. Who cares if so-and-so person thinks that you're not good compared to so-and-so player? I'd imagine that forcing oneself to adapt to a different playstyle than you enjoy is a very easy way to stop having fun with shmups, and what's the point of playing if you're not having fun?
