They'll either cluster them all around the first bridge or the core. Either dive down and take the under part of the bridge or hold on to the ledge and go around. Sometimes you can easily walk around them.

I recently got into MGS (after being interested in it for a couple of years) and started to watch a let's play of the first MGS just today, as I don't have the option to play it myself right now.
The videos themselves are actually very good, I just have some troubles with the game itself. The people playing are now at the tank boss, and so far I've already had troubles to keep up with all the details mentioned in codecs and the general plot. There is a shitload of information constantly thrown at you, and I can't constantly focus at every single line of dialogue.
How important are such details though?
