Finally joined the hull and superstructure and got a working idea on what kind of base I want. Got the main block from a Hasegawa 1/700 Myoko kit and cut the resting strands to size from a longer basswood strip I got from a crafts store. I like the drydock-reminiscent look. I'll barnish the whole base once I glue the resting strips, but first I need to get more base blocks for future projects.

I've been considering getting a Mutsu next but appearance-vise she's quite close to Kongou and Yamashiro so maybe I'll get a Yamato or some heavy cruiser. And yes, they're all Fujimi 1/700s. The wiring is stretched sprue on the Kongou and Atago. On the Yamashiro I actually used strains of hair (except for the crane and the sides of the pagoda), it's a lot more forgiving than stretched sprue which just snaps if you touch it. Some photoetch would make it look better though.

t5 nazi cruiser is a blast. Nipponese t4-t6 are great too. No purpose for high tiers atm since WG hasn't implemented clans or t10 clan battles
try all the classes, as they say variety is the spice of life.

T9-10. On T8 You are basically getting 0 credits if you are okay., and still get some profit if good. Even without premium.

Cleveland, Budyonny, Myoko, Molotov, in no particular order. Haven't played the nazis though.
Cleveland and Budy are both nice firespam ships with fast guns. Budy is faster, has torpedoes (though they're honestly pretty weak), and its shells fly faster. Cleveland has an extra turret and excellent AA.
Myoko is just an all-round excellent ship. Powerful guns with excellent HE, plus some good torps. Just don't show too much of your broadside or you won't live long enough to regret it.
Molotov is great for itsunique and balanced ))))ability to citadel almost any cruiser at tier and above from near maximum range because of its amazing shell velocity and AP performance.

t1 - t4 is pretty much sealclubbing clusterfuck territory
t5 - t7 is actually more or less normal people, with the occasioanl actual teamplay happening

t8 and t9 is OK if you know what you are doing credit-wise, t10 means you will pretty much lose credits no matter what you try.
The problem is that at t9 and t10 the balance is shit, and the matchmaker regularly kills any and all chances of actually having a good or fun game.

When you fire broadside, it is mostly when you're either long range or "brawling" or are there other circumstances where you can afford to do it without taking too much risk getting assraped?

If you show broadside to a battleship at any range assume you will take an assload of damage. There's a forum post detailing how damage is done, I highly recommend finding and reading it.
Past 10km-ish you can chance showing broadside to cruisers but I still recommend staying angled at all times.
The only times you want to show broadside to fire all guns is when you know for a fact that the only ships that can shoot you are otherwise preoccupied. You can also meme behind islands and fire over them, staying unspotted so long as there isn't a destroyer or aircraft around you. This is difficult to set up but highly rewarding.
Constantly use your rudder to throw off torpedoes - but you will still get torped, don't get angry about this.

You should keep angled as much as possible to minimize target profile and get the most out of your armor.
At long range you might be able to get away with it if no one is looking at you, but generally it's safer to angle. At close to medium range showing broadside is an invitation for you to get assraped.

There certainly are a bunch of unfun shitbotes at t9, but that's not it.
The t9 and t10 games are stale as fuck, punish active or mobile gameplay and reward cancerous bullshit like 3 t10 DD divs.
Then we add in things like cruisers essentially being unable to actually fulfill their intended roles, 1/4 meta BBs, the endless shitty HE spam and torpedo soup that this forces everyone to adopt and end up shitty gameplay.
Also, the broken and fucked up AA and plane system.
