Essentially. OG sonic fan from back at the beginning. You guys remind me a lot of the fandom back then. High energy. Before the ebb of the mid 1990s, before the dark times of the mid 2000s.
I'd lost hope in the franchise a few years back. Too many failed games, false hopes. The Sonic cycle was a real thing for me. A lot of it was the autism though, guys like Chris Chan, and Spax3, the whole Shadow thing. It wears you down after a while. After Naka left, the series felt like living with a terminal patient.
Something changed over the last few years though, looking back on it. The lingering sonic cycle regrets and train wrecks like Boom just kept me away, but there has definitely been a reinvigoration for some reason. Can't say why exactly, but you don't see projects like AtS and the HD remasters for a written off franchise.
The last title I gave time to was Rush iirc. I had actually written off both Colors and Generations as cash ins, but now I actually want to play them. Hard to get a copy of Colors though, unless they re-release it on Virtual Console. Any other recommendations for a returning old-fag?

Which is a paradox, in order to seal Mephiles, Shadow has to unleash him in the present day, but if he isn't sealed then Shadow doesn't eventually go back TO seal him.

Sonic has an AWFUL Time travel story because it breaks the cardinal rule, where there has to be an original timeline for the characters to take part in.
See Chrono Trigger. There are events that happen without the help of crew before they even go through time, and what they do affects time accordingly, not that everything happened because of time travel.

When Shadow seals Mephiles in the past it's right after the Duke's experiment blows up in his face and Solaris is separated into Mephiles and Iblis. The really dark one on TV where Sonic has some relationship with a squirrel and there are animals with replaced body parts and Robotnik is a robot and some kingdom was overthrown or politics and loads of other really wierd shit.
I'm convinced that's the source of 90% of the worst autism in the franchise. It was the time it arrived because I think a lot of fans were hitting puberty. At the time I felt there was something wrong about it, and as the years go by when I think back it just becomes clearer.

Time travel plots are always fucked up. One man's paradox is another man's stable time loop.
Alternatively, in the original timeline someone else sealed Mephiles in the Scepter and Iblis in Elise, but then when Shadow and Silver went back in time they took the place of whoever did originally.

You know, that level's design was reused for Metropolis Zone act 3 and it's graphics was reused for some level in Spinball, along with Hidden Palace
I had the idea to try to recreate the level with Metropolis act 3 and that Spinball level's graphics some years ago, but I never really got around to it for some reasons I don't remember
