Having never played any version of WoW before, what things will I be expected to know before grouping? I'm not sure if people will be willing to explain everything to me at the time.
If it makes any difference, I asked for an analogous job to EQ's Bard and was recommended elemental shaman or shadow priest. So I'll likely be playing one of those.

not much, if you're not experienced then don't tank and don't be the guy setting the pace by pulling things and stuff - just hang back and try to do the basics competently, try to do each instance at least once at an appropriate level to get a feel for it and to network with people around your level you can group with as you both progress

Unfortunately all hybrids in Vanilla are very bad at anything but healing in endgame pve. It doesn't matter while leveling up or in pvp, but once you hit the end you're a buffing/healing bitch or nobody will bring you.
This changes around 2008 during TBC but Vanilla is 2006 Warcraft.

It makes sense in a PvE perspective, where buttons that aren't in the optimal rotation are just literally clutter in the spellbook, but in PvP every single skill has a situational purpose.
Also nothing pisses me off more than Demon Hunters existing. It's literally the god damn exact same fucking thing as Monk, except it looks cooler and isn't fucking retarded lore wise. As someone who has played Mage and Priest for years, I'm so excited for another 100% uptime melee class that has 20 interrupts and 10 gap closers.

The DPS in group 2 is less than that of group 1, but more likely just result of having to have avoided more deep breaths or something. The mages in group 1 are relatively worse than the ones in group 2. I don't know. Maybe it just took them 10 trys to learn to avoid standing in the fire.
