Witcher 1 was my first game. I love it to this day, but I found that its story is a fucking wreck that falls apart as soon as you read the books. The main story itself is certainly not its strongest point.
Meanwhile, Witcher 2's plot featured some elements from the books, but kept it to a minimum. It was CDPR's more "original" work - and they're better at that than strictly following the books, as clearly shown by W2 and HoS, the two best storylines of the trilogy.
Of course, the complexity of the game's political plot can also tick people off. Some, like you, just can't grasp all of it, they think it's needlessly complicated, intricate. It's not for everyone, I understand that much, no matter how disappointing it is.

About as large as Velen, very beautiful landscape that captures Riviera, France extremely well, the quests are enjoyable, grandmaster gear requires you to go to ~2-3 places, at most, a familiar face returns, the MQ is shorter than HoS, but there are plenty of side quests for you to tackle. There isn't really a good one since the nerfs to firestream, which was the bread/butter damage dealing skill for sign builds in early patches. Now the most common Sign build is just spamming Piercing Cold, which trivializes normal enemy packs. (But does minimal work to knock-down immune enemies)
So, after a long time in waiting, I finally started BaW now... strolling about at a very leisurly pace, and it's been ups and downs so far.
Now I did the Smitten Knight quest, and initially loved it. Did the egg thing, was sufficiently pleased with the outcome.
Since I like to check for other options, I reloaded to see the other path as well - and at first thought - oh man, I gamed myself out of the "good ending". On rethinking however, I kind of hate this version now. Geralt - showing no integrity, after being specifically asked to be discreet goes on to spill the beans after the teensiest bit of prodding. And even worse - apparently juvenile stalking while infatuated constitutes twu luv now?
Fuck this, CDPR. This franchise has seen too much waifufaggotry, methinks. It sort of makes the quest a lot less enjoyable in hindsight.
I do hope Gillaume changes into some hideous bird-hybrid thingie within the fortnight in this version.
Also, how hammy is that Triss letter? I guess I deserve it for going with the redhead (don't judge me, it was the save I still had lying around).
Well, I still hope BaW will turn out to be the best thing ever. So far - doesn't hold a candle to HoS (but, as I said, I'm not that far in).

I'm in the middle of doing my DLC replay of Witcher 3, and right now I'm just before the Ugly Baby quest. I'd like to get to the DLC as quickly as possible, since I'm going full autismo and doing 100% completion of quests and locations (again) and that's become boring as shit, but I also don't want to go if I'm going to get fucked up.
I'm currently level 25 (almost 26) so I'm a fair way below the recommended level for Hearts of Stone even, but that leaves me wondering when I should start it. Should I wait until after I rescue Ciri and we're planning the final stages in Novigrad, or should I do it as soon as I have 100% completion of Velen, Novigrad, and Skellige? By then I expect I'll be somewhere around level 28, which might be good enough to handle the DLC.

Rescuing Ciri is quite a long sequence and it gives you a lot of XP. you'll probably be level 30+ by then.
Don't bother to get 100% completion. Not worth it especially the stupid smuggler caches.

Personally, I could go either way on this. Not stealing the horses feels more true to character to me (and the elves are kind of asshole-ish), but the stealing-sequence is decent and will make Ciri happy.

Didn't they straight up reject trading with the elves? Pretty sure Ciri's friends tried to buy them first, and you can even offer to buy the horses for them but apparently the trader just refuses to trade with them.

Story-wise, HoS is just a regular witcher contract gone seriously wrong, so it fits into the main story.
In B&W, you fuck off to Toussaint for at least a month, which will be weird when you come back and like

I'm not entirely sure about BaW yet (content-wise), HoS is fine to do during the main quest. It will even give you a couple of lines of extra dialogue (nothing important, just minor tidbits).
You do not have to do the DLC after the main quest (I'd actually argue content-wise HoS might be better before finishing the main gameLI and sowing the wild seeds-wise), but it's not detrimental either, as far as I can see.
One thing to consider - added options for gear etc, you do get more usage out of them, obviously, if you don't "finish the game" beforehand.
Long story short - I'd say either way is fine, but personally prefer playing at least HoS before the main quest ends.
