If you have 200 health and you peak a corner you'll take damage or die and have to run to a health pack.
If roadhog peaks a corner it's to hook someone, he has 600 health and he has a 300hp heal on 8s cooldown. That's faster than health packs respawn.

i really wanted to get good at her, but i cant deal any kind of significant damage, even while harrassing on the flanks, and i cant take any damage either.

You have to learn how to use the Shift ability. Its great to push and combined with meele its 55 damage. She's great to get close FAST and eliminate enemies like Bastion, Widowmaker, Turrets, when you use the Shift+E.
Always aim to Head/Neck because she really needs a damage boost.
When you mech its broken its not the end of the world. When you're in Hana form, just keep moving and ALWAYS aim to the head. You can get a new mech in a really short time if you keep shooting enemies.

I think it's dumb that some characters don't have much chance at gold medals. Medals and winning are huge boosts to leveling, but Mei isn't really a gold medal person. She'll probably snag silver healing if there isn't a road hog, she might get some kills or damage if she's really good and there's nobody else doing that well, but in a perfect world she's silver or copper on those.
So Mei mains are going to be vastly under leveled compared to people who play other characters. Picking Mei literally puts you 180 exp further from a loot box.

I've ran into it more than anyone should have to. What works for me is 4 soldier and 2 rein.
Try to ask your team mates to attack turrets from left to right. With 4 soldier focus you can kill turrets really fast.
You have to switch as soon as you notice it. If you give them time to charge all their molten cores it's going to be a long push. Still possible, just really long.
The torbs will change after you move the payload so be ready to change it up.

so if you solo queue and your win rate is 70% then you get matched against other players who have 70% win rate.
Almost everyone who plays the game for longer than 10 hours has sub 60% win rate. Therefore you it takes you're 70% win rate + a bunch of randoms with 40% win rate and matches you against a premade with 60% win rate and you lose
you keep losing until your win rate is under 50% and then you get matched against retards and you win.
