Then things started feeling like I absolutely needed to monitor the game at all times so I could get the characters I wanted. Then I hit Level 29 and everything stagnated. Cue MVPepper and two and a half months of events.

If your phone or whatever has an auto-shutdown for the screen to turn off after a while then you need to tap the game every so often before that activates (it's probably too late to turn that option off since we don't know how long until the second part will get sent out) but other than that plug it in and wait the 5+ hours I guess.
