What you want to do, in order to have machine translation display alongside text, is to enable it in preferences - right click the VNR icon in the tray bar (the bottom right corner of the screen, right next to the clock), then click on the "Translators" tab (Translation -> Translators). Pick the one you'd like out of several different possibilities - feel free to test them all out to choose which one you like the most, or even use several at once if you so desire!
Now, this kind of deep knowledge of a complex, difficult to learn software like VNR is not expected of average /hgg/ poster. Sybaris is a popular choice of a cm3d2 patcher. In order to install it correctly, with english translation - which is ultimately mandatory to enjoy the rich depths of the cm3d2 storyline - follow this simple guide.
Start with installing CM3D2 with the original discs, update as needed. Follow up with DLC's. Download Sybaris, put the sybaris directory and opengl32.dll to the main folder. UnityInjector plugins go to sybaris\plugins\unityinjector, mods go to sybaris\gamedata. Avoid duplicates if possible, Sybaris doesn't like them! Download the Unified Translation Loader, CM3D2.Translation.dll goes to sybaris\plugins\managed while CM3D2.Translation.Patcher.dll goes to sybaris\loader, unityinjector stuff goes to unityinjector folder mentioned before, text (strings) go to sybaris\plugins\unityinjector\config. Now the only thing left is to launch the game and enjoy it!
