CUL is the best way to get blue scrip. Wait until Marron Glace is the turn-in for the day. ALC is the best way to get red scrip, because it's pretty well always Noble's Codex or Noble Gold, both of which use almost the same ingredients, all of which are made by GSM or ALC.
You won't need much gear if you have your other crafts at 50, but even if those are your only three classes, it shouldn't be too hard to do it with entry-level 60 gear.

It's really jarring if you're used to the way that the game's economy works on other servers, but honestly once you get used to it, Balmung's MB feels a lot more 'functional' than any other server I've seen. The prices on things generally stay in proportion to the amount of gil that players actually generate through play, and crafting and gathering are seldom so lucrative that you go from being a dirt-poor level 59 gatherer to a multi-millionaire robber baron as soon as you hit a Legendary node. There's actual market competition and it's pretty tough to make money without putting in an amount of effort that's roughly proportionate to the money you pull from it.

Nah, it wasn't botting that tanked the price. It was that not many people had bothered doing the Gatherer scrip grind, either for blue scrips to buy Folklore tomes or for red scrips to get gear.
Remember that prior to the 220 crafted gear in 3.2, Legendary nodes were fucking worthless because all you could pull off of them were Blue Quartz, Wattle Bark, etc, which were useless for everything except making crafting gear that was ALSO useless for everything except making more crafting gear (that was useless for everything except making more crafting gear, that was useless for[...]).
Prices were high for a couple weeks while people got gear and tomes, and then tanked back down to what was basically appropriate.

I play both, although I have been away for ~4 months so idk if things have changed much. I am also bad so take whatever I say with a grain of salt. They are both fun imo.
Astrologian is more fluid, like I find myself moving around a lot more and in diurnal your casts feel really fast. Cards and all the shuffling/burning/etc is very satisfying, but imo many of its spells lack the "oomph" that you get from scholar ones. I find myself really doing a lot of casting with astro whereas with scholar I can be a bit more judicious. I don't think the class is as well designed as scholar, which imo is almost perfect. It plays very differently though and I find it a refreshing break.
I'm not the biggest final fantasy fan so I may get this wrong, but I think scholar is derived from or similar to the tactician class. And that is exactly what it feels like to me, it's more stationary than astro but I feel like I'm a general or something: ordering the fairy around, making people stack for buffs/shields, gesticulating after consulting my little book, it's like I'm directing troops during a battle.

You can get away with having all crafting classes at 15 for some decent crafting. Lv. 37 in Culinarian, and Lv. 50 in Weaver, Alchemist, and Carpenter are also helpful. But if you plan to be serious about crafting, I would recommend getting them all to level cap. Unfortunately, I've yet to delve into HW crafting, so I'll try to pass along your post to those who may be able to give a proper answer to your question.

serpentskin hq is higher base stats than trailblazer as i recall, but 3.0 was fifty years ago. i mostly completely ignored it because if you had level 50 AF with ANY melds it would be better than trailblazer. Alchemy, Blacksmith, Carpenter and Weaver to 50. These are not optional if you want to craft anything worth a damn. Culinarian is also required if you plan on doing end-game crafting because there's inevitably going to be that time where Hasty Touch fails ten times in a row and your only option is to Reclaim and hope you don't lose materials.
Goldsmithing to 54 if you want to open every craft with Maker's Mark and Flawless Synthesis.
Others to 37 if you care about elemental crafts which are extremely rare.

I hit 60 right now, im currently wearing the 55 set and i guess its time to upgrade to serpentskin? What does my progression look like now?
Farm scrips? If so, what do i use them for? Or do i farm money (clusters from ephemeral nodes?) to get better gear? I have around 1.5 mil at the moment and im a little lost

upgrade to serpentskin asap, its better than the 55 set. farm blues to get AF, use your reds to upgrade your AF. if you have money, you can get the ironworks but imo thats more for established players that can afford to meld the shit out of it

Jesus fucking christ I have to paint a goddamn picture for you to understand me! The Dragonskin jewelry you usually wear with Serpentskin isn't a part of the Serpentskin set, it's considered part of the Trailblazer set so you are wearing half Serpentskin and half Trailblazer.
